'Mello is going to kill me,' Matt thought as he picked up the birthday cake from the store. Mello had told Matt that he did not want to celebrate his birthday in any way, shape, or form. Matt had not listened. While Mello had been out one day, he had ordered a full chocolate cake from the grocery store and now he had to sneak it back into their hotel room without the blond finding out. Matt placed the cake on the small coffee table and sat down to wait for Mello. He got so lost in his video game that he did not even see or hear the blond enter the room.

"Matt why is there a cake on the table?" Mello questioned. Matt looked up at the scarred man, pausing his game.

"I know that you didn't want to celebrate your birthday, Mello, but it felt wrong not to," Matt told him honestly.

He was nervous about the blonds' reaction, expecting to be yelled at. However, the small smile that graced his friend's scarred face was a pleasant surprise. He had never seen Mello smile a genuine smile before and he was glad that it was his actions that had put the expression on the other's face. It seemed that there was so little to smile about now a days and Matt was glad that he could make his companion even a little happy.
