"Carter! Be careful!"
Susan Lewis watched impatiently as her boyfriend balanced on the fifteen-inch ledge of her apartment building. His feet planted firmly on the concrete, Carter moved slightly to the left. About six inches later he hit a small groove in the surface, causing him to loose his balance.
"Carter!" Susan screamed again, but could do nothing to help him.
"Susan..." He yelped and quickly regained his composure. Once again in a standing position he took a nervous breath and smiled that goofy smile at her. "I'm ok. You should talk to your landlord about extending these ledges though."
'Why is he always playing the hero? He'd put himself on the line for anybody...' Susan thought.
"Carter hurry up before somebody calls the fire department!" Susan shouted over the cold wind blowing into her ears.
Carter turned and looked wide-eyed at her.
"Your rushing a man on a ledge eight stories above the ground? Remind me never to let you near the attempted suicides!" Carter smiled, but it was a nervous one as he inched his way towards the panicked victim.
Susan smiled and shook her head. "Carter just shut up and get her down! It's not safe up here."
"You think?" He gripped the wall tightly and moved the last ten inches towards the body in need of rescue.
'Why did I ever let him do this? Why did he volunteer in the first place? Oh I forgot, because he was too stubborn not to. Sometimes I hate how stubborn he is...but sometimes I love it. Sometimes I think I love him.'
Looking up, she suddenly realized that there were no sounds coming from the ledge. Panicked, Susan looked over. Carter wasn't there. 'Oh God! He fell. He fell and I never got to tell him that I lo...'
"Susan, a little help here?" The voice sounded from next to the window and she looked out to see Carter and what looked like a very grateful cat. She broke into a smile and laughed out loud with relief.
Reaching down, she helped to hoist him back through the window into the apartment. She immediately pulled him into a hug, cat and all. He let out a muffled laugh and returned the show of affection.
He pulled back and smiled again. "Well if I'd known that rescuing your cat would get this reaction I'd leave your window open more often."
"Oh no you don't, don't ever scare me like that again. Next time Missy can find her own way in."
Suddenly Missy hissed and jumped from Carters arms. She disappeared underneath the bed.
"I don't think your cat likes me very much." Carter said, pulling Susan into an embrace. After a long kiss they pulled back.
"Well she'll just have to deal with it because I plan to keep you around for a while."
"Oh yea?"
"Yea."
They kissed again, with two curious feline eyes watching from below.
The End
