Summary: She wanted to make him something special for his birthday. She somehow managed to forget that she couldn't exactly cook.
XX
It was his birthday and as much as he would try to ignore it, she was determined that he wouldn't. So she woke up extra early and combed her hair but then made it short and pink anyway because that was how he loved it the best. She went down to the kitchen and began to take out the ingredients to make a cake when it suddenly occurred to her that she had no idea how to make a cake at all. But she was anything if resourceful so she pushed up her sleeves and got to work chopping a steak.
She might not know how to make a cake but she certainly knew what sort of food her husband preferred.

He, meanwhile, woke up very happy to the scent of freshly cooked food. He absently rose from the bed noting that she had, for a change, risen before him. He shaved and bathed and put on a set of robes and headed downstairs to go to the kitchen. When he stepped in, he realized that he had, in his early morning blur, mistakenly smelled 'freshly cooked food' instead of the actually present 'freshly burned food'.

She threw aside the saucepan with a frustrated bang as she burned more onions and chili peppers. In her eagerness to make her husband something special to eat for his birthday, she had also forgotten that she didn't know how to cook. In fact, her talent was for burning food beyond repair, even with magic.
She heard an amused chuckle behind her and turned around to see her raggedy husband leaning in the doorway.

"You're cooking today," he commented dryly, taking in the stains across her clothing and the army of messy dishes scattered around her. "What's the occasion?"

She couldn't help but smile. He always forgot, almost as if he was trying specifically to. "Your birthday?" she said, grinning wider at the confused look on his face. "It's your birthday and I wanted to make you something special."

Oh. That. He didn't want to remember his birthday. It always made him feel so old compared to her.
"You don't need to make me anything," he said, striding across the kitchen to her, carefully picking his way around the remains of her cooking attempts. "You're a gift enough for me. You're the best and the only gift I could ever want."
He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into an embrace, food-splattered clothes and all.

She twined her fingers into his raggedy hair and sighed against his lips. She was so glad to have him. He loved her no matter what, he loved her always. It didn't matter to him that she was clumsy and that she couldn't cook and that she loved the Weird Sisters. He loved her for being her, even thought it meant that she would always burn their breakfast and…
She shrieked as she turned around and registered the fire behind her.

Remus had a fun morning on his birthday trying to prevent his wife from, once again, burning down their little house. He knew there was a reason he married Nymphadora.
