Natural Balance

Because sometimes we must do what is right versus what is easy. Reef/Fin. Mild Reef/Lo; implied Fin/OC.

FUTURE!FIC

THIS IS REALLY, REALLY ROUGH. I am so sorry guys.

This fic initially involved time travel, an idea which was scrapped shortly after my brainstorming session in my AP Calculus class sparked a brand new idea! I'm in the middle of a Stoked Goes to Hogwarts fic, so a Stoked fic centering around a Harry Potter quote was inevitable. Enjoy!

MaReefland was the same. She can see remains of the shelter she made a few years back scattered across the sand, the small fire pit she made remains untouched.

"At least the weather's good this year," Reef says, brushing sand off his jeans. He doesn't surf much anymore – a bad knee injury had resulted in him having to give up the sport almost entirely (it had also resulted in an extremely dramatic fit on Reef's part, which he thrown in front of his entire hospital wing when the doctor told him he wasn't able to surf anymore).

Fin shrugs and slides her hands in her coat pocket.

They stand and watch the water silently.

"It's kind of silly that we still come here," Fin says, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. "If we wanted a yearly tradition to…see each other we should invite everyone else."

Reef just smirks. "Yeah. I guess it is. But it's not like all of us are that close anymore, besides me and Lo."

There is a pause.

Fin bites her lip. "You guys are still together? I thought you broke up last July?" she interjects, glancing at a large wave washing over the beach.

Reef laughs. "Did you only remind me to come out to the Hotel this year so you could seduce me, Finnegan?"

Fin says nothing. Reef looks down at her, the muscles in his back suddenly tense.

"I'm sorry, Fin –"

"Look Reef," Fin snaps. "Christopher asked me to marry him. I said I'd think about it."

"Oh."

They do not speak for several minutes.

Fin tries not to think, she's already made peace with everything in her life. Reef, Lo and working at that stupid resort is a closed life-chapter. She is only here to see a friend, a friend who she has a completely platonic relationship with and –

Reef opens his mouth as if to give a more articulate reply, but at the look on Fin's face he closes his mouth and looks away.

Fin just sighs because she knows Christopher is settling for her, as she will probably end up settling for him.

She takes a deep breath and looks out at the water. Reef looks down at his feet.

They're quiet again. Reef turns to face her and gently cresses her shoulder.

"If you don't want to marry him, just say no. I don't think Christopher will mind too much. If I asked Lo to marry her, she'd probably say no and it wouldn't be a huge deal."

"She wouldn't say no."

Fin takes another deep breath and Reef lowers his head down towards her. She presses her mouth against his carefully and she can feel him smile against her lips.

Any previous feelings Fin had moments ago slip away; she is kissing him.

And she feels a small surge of accomplishment, of genuine happiness she had not felt in a while because Reef kisses back.
