He had called her beautiful once. It seemed so long ago now that Mira wondered if she had heard him right. Even with the distance between them she could still somehow feel Taylor near and on occasions of weakness, as was the case this night wondered if he felt the same. She had made her choice. It was not one that she regretted just one that took time to deliver its reward.
Under the cover of night the dark woman surveyed the makeshift village hidden in branches of the trees around her. For now, as she did every night she would watch over her people. The small army that had come to see her as their leader and yet it had all happened so fast. Once she had been one of a small number of lone rogues wandering the wilderness and now had entire families trusting her with their lives, suddenly she was the deciding factor in wether or not people lived or died.
Although Mira would never admit it, it was a scary thought. One wrong decision could cause her fragile kingdom to fall. Crossing her arms beneath her breast she leaned back on the small section of tree trunk behind her and held back a shiver as yet another cold wind whipped through the trees.
It was on nights like these she wished for the company of a familiar face. No, his face. He had been the one to give her the boldness she held that day. He had single handedly revealed to her strengths within her own person she did not know existed. All this he did for her and yet Mira knew she would never be able to pay him back.
She remembers kissing him. His hands on her and the feeling of his breath on her shoulder. She had felt safe with him despite the danger of them being together. It was never a questions of what was right but rather what felt right at the time. Just as she did not regret her choice to leave she did not regret her choice to be with him.
There would always be a part of Mira's heart that belonged to Taylor but if this is what she had to do to protect her daughter she would do it all again. Had the man known of her situation he might have understood there might have been a chance and maybe just maybe nights like these would not exist for her.
