Chapter 1 Sheriff Thomas
EPOV
1952
My music blasted in my eardrums as I watched the tree's rush by. Carlisle sat behind the wheel stealing glances at me in the mirror every so often. We could have ran here but Esme insisted on driving. Why? To seem more normal, she would say. Annoyance filled my cold, hard lifeless body as yet more trees past by.
Edward!
Ripping my headphones off, I glared at the owner of the loud voice that filled my head. Emmett smiled at me with his usual childish grin. "Carlisle's been calling you, like six times." Keeping my glare on him a few seconds longer, I turned to the driver.
"We arrived. I want to go over our story once more."
"We've been over it twice," I mumbled.
"Third time's a charm," the patriarch said as he looked to his wife to start but not before glancing in the mirror to see if I was still paying attention.
"Okay! Carlisle and I are married, Edward is our son, and we adopted Alice. Jasper and Rose are Carlisle's kids from another woman who died and Emmett is my nephew." Esme announced for the third time. I rolled my eyes to the window but my eyes were pulled back to the front of the car as Jasper asked a question.
"How old are we?"
"Emmet you're nineteen, Rose is eighteen, Alice and Jasper are both seventeen and Edward is sixteen. Carlisle will be thirty-five and I'll be thirty-four. As far as grades are concerned, Emmett and Rose are seniors, Jasper and Alice juniors and Edward is sophomore. Carlisle will be working at the hospital while I will be a stay at home mom." Esme finished as she glanced back to see if everyone understood. After everyone nodded in a agreement, all eyes fell on me.
"Got it Eddie-bear?" Emmett asked.
"Don't call me that," I growled.
"Well do you got it or not?"
"I got it the first two times we went over it. They're going over it again because you don't seem to have the brain capacity to understand a single sentence."
"Edward, let's not start this now. Same goes for you Emmett." Carlisle said firmly as he looked at us in the mirror. Emmett sat back and wrapped his arms around that thing he calls a wife. Rosalie glared at me as she laid her head on his chest. "Edward-"
"Yeah Carlisle, I got it." I interrupted as I looked back out the window only to notice we came to a complete stop on the side of the road. A town laid draped in front of us.
"Welcome to Portland, Oregon," Carlisle announced as Esme touched his hand. "Alright, everyone pile out." Not needing to be told twice, I opened the door and hopped out, but not before putting my headphones back on. As soon as our feet hit the ground, all eyes fell on us and the thoughts started.
Who are they?
Where did they come from?
Is that the new doctor?
Is he married?
Oh that's a big family.
God they're gorgeous!
I wonder if the big guy is single.
Must be Dr. Cullen.
The last comment caught my attention. Looking towards the owner, my eyes fell on a man wearing a coat with a badge attached to it. He narrowed his eyes as he looked at us. Esme started walking towards him with my "siblings" in tow. I started to follow but a hand on my arm stopped me. Carlisle moved in front of me then pulled my headphones off.
"Everything okay?" he asked quietly as he stared me in the eyes.
"Yeah why?"
"You seem agitated."
Rolling my eyes, I replied, "I'm getting into character." He gave me a look that read, I'm serious.
"Is this about the move. I know-"
"Carlisle, I'm fine, really. Can we go now, people are starting to stare." He pierced his lips but nodded before moving out of my way and pushing me gently towards the group. Once we reached them, Esme and the cop stepped forward.
"This is , he's the sheriff. Sheriff Thomas, this is my husband Carlisle and our son Edward." Carlisle shook the man's hand then he nodded at me.
"I saw you folks pull up and figured you were the new doctor."
"Yes sir, I am." Carlisle said with a smile. I watched as the man blushed slightly and raised an eyebrow at Emmett who was making rapid eyebrow movements behind the man's back. "We weren't supposed to arrive until tomorrow but we decided to take a full day to get to know the place."
"Well, I just wanted to welcome you. So welcome! I'll leave you folks be. Dr. Cullen, Mrs. Cullen, kids." Sheriff Thomas said as he tipped his hat.
"Sheriff, before you go, I wondering if you could point us in the direction of the school. We still need to get the kids enrolled." Esme said sweetly. The sheriff flushed again as he licked his lips, trying to form a sentence. I swear I could hear Carlisle grind his teeth, or maybe I'm imaging it.
"Uh..yes ma'am. The school is up ahead about four stops, but it's closed today, should be open tomorrow though."
"Oh. Well, I guess we can do that then," Esme said as she looked to Carlisle who nodded.
"Sounds good to me. Let's head to the house and get unpacked."
"Okay. Thank you sheriff. Kids, come on back in the car." Esme said as she looked at all of us.
"Nice to meet you sir," Jasper said through his clenched teeth as he and Alice headed in the direction of the school with Emmett and Rosalie following behind. I turned to follow but the sheriff's voice stopped me.
"Excuse me, young man." Looking at him he narrowed his eyes. "Sorry, um...what was your name?"
"Edward." I said quietly.
"I'm sorry?"
"Sweetheart, the sheriff asked a question. Speak up please." Esme said in what Emmett calls her "mother tone."
Clearing my throat, I said, "My name is Edward." Sheriff Thomas nodded as he looked me up and down. An image of a young boy filled his mind. He looked just like me only difference being, the boy had blonde hair and vibrant blue eyes.
"You look familiar. Have we met before?" Carlisle and Esme glanced at each other quickly, alarm filled their eyes and their minds as they looked between us.
Do you know him? Carlisle thought in panic.
I shook my head but remained quiet. "Edward?" Carlisle spoke out loud as he nodded towards the sheriff who was still waiting for an answer.
"No, we've never met," I said answering both of the men at the same time. Relief washed over Esme and Carlisle as well.
"Are you sure?" The sheriff asked.
"Yes."
The young boy that filled the man's mind stared back at me before he tilted his head back and let out a loud laugh. He pointed at me-no the sheriff- and laughed loudly again. Suddenly he vanished and I came face to face with Esme. She looked at me with some sort of meaning that I missed. The sheriff and Carlisle stood talking but the lawman kept glancing at me.
Walk to the car Edward, Esme thought to me and I turned and did as I was told. She placed her hand on my back as if to guide me across the street like any mother would their child. As soon as I closed the door behind me, Jasper pounced.
"What was that about?" I didn't get a chance to answer as Carlisle got in the car. The entire car sat in silence as he pulled off in the direction of the house. Finally Jasper repeated his question. I simply shrugged as I looked at the sheriff who stood watching the car ride away.
