Herbert sat behind his table, several feet away from Daniel.
He listened as Cain listed what he deemed his atrocities against mankind; how he desecrated human remains for his own amusement. If they were anywhere else, he would have pointed out in his clinical manner that archaeologists were merely sanctified versions of what he happened to be accusing him of, people who went into the graves of others human beings all for the sake of "discovery".
In all probability, people would be digging up their graves several hundred years from now, for the sake of "discovery".
He managed to put on a saddened look as Daniel continued, earning sympathy from the jury. He picked at a fingernail without looking at it.
As the judge asked if there was anything he would like to add before the case was turned over to the jury for sentencing, he was able to reply "No, your honor" without his usual disdain.
He doubted he could trust anyone else to help him with his work from now on, because even the easily manipulated Cain had turned on him. It would have been impossible for him to anchor Cain without the lure of Megan's heart, even if he hadn't turned him in.
But, then again, people had a hard enough time believing that he had come through the collapse of the Morlan crypt unscathed. At least it kept people away, with their annoying questions.
When they came back to the courtroom, it was all he could do not to grin as the jury begrudgingly admitted that they were unable to convict him, saying that there was not enough evidence. The looks on their faces proved that they wished it were otherwise, but they hadn't gotten him this time.
Yes, it would be a long time before they could get enough to cage him. A very long time.
