The Orbs invaded New York in 2002.
It was quite sudden, really. It was a day like any other day, with people going about minding their own business, going to work, eating and drinking, socializing, occasionally being heroic or committing crimes. It didn't seem like it was going to be unusual in any way.
Then it happened. Small, round, black spaceships rocketed down from the sky, descending into the entirety of the city. They released bombs and rockets into many of the buildings and cars, causing pandemonium and chaos. The military attempted to fight back and ward off the invaders, but the black ball-like ships just kept coming, doing more damage. People panicked and tried to run away, but strange, eyeball-like creatures called Orbs and their killer robots came out of the ships and chased them down, either terminating or capturing them. Nobody escaped, not alive, at any rate.
When it was over, New York City was in shambles. Buildings, houses, and skyscrapers had large holes puncturing them. The streets were very messy, and cars were burning everywhere. Humans who survived the initial assault were held hostage by the invaders as the Orbs prepared to put their plan into action.
As time passed over the next few weeks, everything changed as the humans knew it. Everybody was implanted with a tracking chip in the back of their necks. They also had to wear nondescript brown robes with big hoods, and talking and other ordinary forms of communication were strictly forbidden. The city began to fall into disarray and disrepair, and criminals and punks took advantage of the situation, robbing businesses, spraying graffiti all over alleys and houses, and threatening the lives of the more innocent citizens. Orbs hovered throughout the city blocks along with their patrol robots, eyeing the damage and graffiti with what seemed to be amused interest. Contact with the rest of the world was made impossible.
It seemed as if the world as they knew it would never go back to normal again…
