They didn't even have a body to bury. Nothing. Nothing was left of the body they'd worshiped not a week before. It was so hard to imagine that they would never again get to hold her between them. Never again would Sebastian and Fenris wake up to their lover sleeping quietly, surrounded by their warmth. Her long blond tresses would never again brush past their skin, her bright blue eyes would never again gaze at them with so much love, it was incomprehensible.
Sebastian heard Fenris choke back a sob next him and immediately tucked his remaining lover under his chin. Fenris' normally stoic attitude had been shattered just as the chantry had...just as her body probably had. Tears stung at Sebastian's eyes and his throat grew thick with his suppressed grief. What were they supposed to do now? Damn it! They were supposed to protect her! She was meant to return to Starkhaven with them and rule as the new princess. The prince's arms ached with only one body to hold against him now. The Starkhaven heir vowed that he would do everything he could to keep Fenris alive and safe. These thoughts swirled in his head as Sebastian kissed the top of Fenris' head, determination hardening his normally loving blue eyes.
Pain...pain like he'd never felt before. The empty whole that was clawing at his chest nearly caused Fenris to double over. The pain from his markings was nothing compared to this. All of the pain and torment he'd suffered at the hands of Danarius and Hadriana meant nothing...absolutely nothing compared to the pain of losing her. She had taught him magic was not inherently evil. After all how could someone so loving and warm be evil, despite their magical abilities. Then the abomination had to ruin everything...Fenris' first thought was correct. Magic did spoil everything it touched. In the end, despite all her efforts, the chantry had still been blown up...by magic. She had sacrificed her life to save as many as she could. A new wave of pain shredded Fenris' lungs and Sebastian had to hold him up. Feeling his remaining lover's lips on his head gave Fenris some comfort. The elf glared at the now tranquil abomination. He would protect the prince from magic...at any cost. With renewed determination, Fenris stood up straight and locked eyes with Sebastian.
They would not lose each other as they lost her.
