Disclaimer: The characters belong to Dick Wolf and the song is by The Fray. So obviously not mine.
This takes place post-Wildlife (or during Wildlife but after Eliot gets shot). The song is How To Save A Life by The Fray.
Step one you say we need to talk Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend Let him know that you know best Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend As he begins to raise his voice Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
"Elliot," I say, perching on the edge of his hospital bed. "We need to talk."
He tries to smile, but it comes out as more of a grimace. "I just got shot and you want to have some sort of philosophical discussion?"
"I didn't say that."
"I'm your partner, Liv. I know you."
I sigh. "Elliot, you need to start thinking of your family. I talked to Kathy. She was going to leave. I convinced her to talk to you, but El, you've got to let her in before you lose the best thing you ever had."
He tries to make a joke. "My job?"
"No, your family."
"Don't come telling me how to deal with my family. What do you know about families?"
That hurts, and I think he knows it. It takes me a moment to recover, but when I do, I snap, "Next to nothing. But I talked to your wife while you were undercover and she was furious. You didn't even call to tell her! She was worried, El. She didn't know where you were." I hesitate. "Eli missed you."
"I know, Liv. I'll talk to her, okay? It's not your business."
"I'm your partner, El. I'm your best friend. It's definitely my business."
He rolls over so he's facing away from me. It's a curt dismissal and I sigh before getting up and leaving the room. I wonder why I'm so good when it comes to victims and so bad when it comes to friends. But then I understand.
You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved.
