This is a Warriors fan-fiction set years into the future from The Last Hope. You don't need to have read all the books to read this and it doesn't give away any spoilers to books you may not have read.

"A calico tom, that's impossible!" A voice murmured not too far away. The tom felt the soothing licks of a tongue grooming his pelt and guessed it was his mother. He blindly wriggled towards the milky scent coming from her.

"I think I should call him Swiftkit" he heard his mother purr. I like that name he thought.

"And the grey she-cat can be Hollykit" a deep male voice spoke that he didn't recognise.

"What about the other two" the female voice from before meowed.

"Lionkit, Deadkit? Would you like to choose the names for these two kits?"

Swiftkit heard the sound of excited paw steps rushing over. A confident young voice mewed "Can he be called Mudkit"

"And can the she-kit be called Jaykit" echoed the little voice of the other kit that had ran over.

"They're beautiful names" purred his mother but Swiftkit stopped listening after that as tiredness crept over him and he fell asleep.

Swiftkit woke to the sound of rain pattering against the ground outside the nursery. He slightly opened one eye. He was surprised by unfamiliar brightness and quickly shut it again. Slowly he opened both his eyes. Everything looked blurry to begin with but he quickly adjusted and he started to make out the shapes around him lit by the dim light flooding in from the entrance to the den.

First he noticed a small speckled grey kit to his right curled up against his mother. That must be Hollykit. He looked to his right and saw two dark brown bundles of fur. And they must be Jaykit and Mudkit.

He looked up at his mother. She was fast asleep, her sleek dusty brown flanks rising and falling. He noticed how different her fur was to his own and Jaykits. It was short and wiry like Hollykit's whereas his and Jaykits were long and fluffy. Mudkit's was neither long nor short, it was a medium length and was quite fluffy.

Voices called from outside the den. "Fernflower, I want you to lead a patrol down the Shadowclan border. Take Snowstorm and Flamepelt."

"Can we bring our apprentices?"

"Of course."

Swiftkit couldn't wait to get out of the nursery and explore. He watched the den entrance eagerly as the rain eased off and more cats hurried about the camp. He would be like them one day.
