Chapter 1: Chasing Sparkle
It was early morning and I was in the kitchen preparing my lunch before for school. I had to rush to rush myself because I only had about five more minutes until it was time to leave. I took a zip lock bag out from the kitchen drawer before putting ham and cheese sandwich in it.
"Gotta hurry, gotta hurry." Was my whispering mantra. Then I took a bottle of water and a brownie to snack on for later. I looked around the kitchen hurriedly as I tried to remember what was the next thing I needed before I left. What was I suppose to...? Breakfast, of course! Then I went over to the cabinet and grabbed a fiber chocolate bar and then a breakfast vanilla shake from the refrigerator. When I was done I quickly walked into my room and I grabbed my small rectangle blue side purse and swung it over my head and hung it on left shoulder.
Then I looked down at my dog Sparkle and saw her laying in her small blue and black fur bed as she watched me hurry. I loved small dog breeds but they are a bit pricey so I was lucky to have received a Yorkie/Jack Russell mix a year ago. She's been my little buddy since I found her.
When I noticed the time of my alarm clock I quickly grabbed my book bag and slung it on one of my shoulders.
"Two minutes..." I breathed. Then I picked up my dog with one hand and gathered her dog food container and leash in my other hand. Every morning before school I would take her to my sister's room so that she wouldn't be alone. My sister didn't always know where I would put Sparkle's stuff so I would just set up what she needed in her room.
I was just passing the kitchen doorway when I noticed that the trash can was knocked over and trash all over the floor. That's odd. I didn't notice that when I left the kitchen a minute ago. I looked at the opened back door that the trash can stood on the wall next to. Maybe dad accidentally knocked the trash can over before he went outside. But he would have picked it up when he came back in...I hope he wasn't in a hurry to do a whole list of things before we left.
I sat Sparkle onto the floor and in a hurry I went in to the kitchen and slung my book bag on top of the counter and stuffed my lunch and breakfast in it before zipping it back up. What I didn't notice in my haste was that I had put Sparkle's things in there too. I quickly went over to the door and closed it just enough for my dad to push it open if he was carrying something in his both hands in.
My dad was a construction worker and for some reason I can't figure out he always waits to the last-minute to do things for work. He usually makes me late for school when he does it to. But today I woke up late myself so now i'm behind schedule and I know that someone will no care that I was late to school. However someone would've gotten really angry when they saw that trash on the floor. Most likely my dad and I am not getting yelled at today.
I looked around quickly until I came back to the and of course she wasn't there. I looked over into the kitchen and noticed that the door and saw that it was open just enough for her small body to get through. I opened the door wide enough so I could see if she was outside. And sure enough I was right. I saw her little black curled tail disappear behind the old light blue, nonfunctional, rusty Cadillac car. She went into the small area of woods behind it. It wasn't uncommon to live near the woods in Tallahassee.
"Sparkle! Sparkle come here!" I called as I ran after her. All I could really see were her hind legs running faster as the wooded area became thicker around us.
"Sparkle!" I called again. After about ten seconds later the small dog finally stopped and then she turned around and looked at me. I was not only out of breath but I was surprised that someone's backyard fence wasn't what stopped her. I walked up her slowly so that she wouldn't think that we were playing and run off again.
"Come here Sparkle." I said lifting her up into my arms. "Why would you take off like that?" I asked her, obviously not expecting her to respond. I gave out the whisper of a sigh before I started to go back to my house. Soon after I had started walking I started to wonder why Sparkle had ran off. She usually stops when I tell her to stop and she doesn't like going into unfamiliar territory. She's usually a very timid dog, she doesn't even chase squirrels, she's terrified of them.
After couple of minutes later I wondered where the hack was my house, or any other house for that matter was. The woods shouldn't be this large, I live in a big neighborhood. I really needed to get outta here fast. I might miss my entire first period at this rate. So I started to sprint, but just more and more trees passed me by and there looked to be more up ahead. I stopped and looked around the area but all I could see were woods and it looked more dense and a lot greener. Then I started to realize that these woods looked too different from when I came in.
I adjusted the shirt that I wore underneath my jacket because my heart and my lungs felt strangely hot, I shook my head at first thinking that maybe I was just panicking. But then I felt the uninvisible hairs on my back start to rise up and I realized I felt different from usual. And I also couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. Wait, this sounds ridiculous, i'm just being paranoid, I always get like this when i'm panicked. I blew out a breath of frustration before I shook off the easy feelings. Then I took a couple calming breaths before I called for help.
"Dad! Dad can you hear me?! Daaaad!" I called over and over but no answer. Sparkle's ear perked up in alert at my yelling. I scowled and my breathing became harder because my heart beat started to pick up. Then I looked down at Sparkle, she just glanced up at me with her dark Yorkie eyes before she started to look around the woods and smell its air.
I pulled my cellphone out of my purse and tried to call my dad but all that came up was a robotic female voice. I called my sister but it was no good and the same thing happened with my mom. I was staring to become very worried so I breathe out calming breaths and I decided that I would just have to try to keep my cool. At the end of the day i'll be laughing about this with my family.
Usually when something like this happens I freak out and it turns out to be no big deal at all. Then I tell my family about it and we, well mostly them, have a big laugh. The thought of what I just kept walking while trying to control my breathing. I looked around hoping nothing feral would come out to get us.
After awhile I looked at my phone again to see if I had service. No such luck. I saw that forty minutes had passed on the clock and my feet were starting to drag. However I made up my mind to keep walking, these woods can't go on forever.
Two hours later my feet were hurting and my heart felt heavy. As the canopy of trees that bridged overhead had cast a very dim shade of me and the wood silent tears from my frustration and worry were running down my face. I was weary and could no longer support the four pound dog as I once did. When I started passing a couple more trees I came into a very small area that was cleared of trees had a small waterfall that cascaded only an arm wide and had large rocks surrounding its poll.
"Okay now i'm sure that we're nowhere near our house." I said peeved.
I put Sparkle onto one of the medium-sized boulders and then sat down on one myself. The rocks tightly stood up against one another and came to my hips, so they weren't uncomfortably high.
I heard my stomach growl, but I did not feel like eating. I was to upset. But Sparkle hadn't eaten since last night and I had the responsibility to look after her of course so I started to search in my bag for something for her to eat. Although I was mostly heading for my sandwich that I had packed later but going through my papers and my benders I found her food container. I squinted my eyes and a small incomplete smile came upon my face knowing how I must have put her stuff in my bag in accidentally. Thank goodness for that.
I pulled out the dog food and set it down on the rock Sparkle sat on, letting her eat about half of it. I then felt her stomach with my hand to see if she was full, and she was. I closed the container back up and put it away. I felt thirsty so I grabbed my water bottle and took a swig of it, I knew hat Sparkles wouldn't want any. She doesn't drink much water. I put the bottle away and looked at my cellphone hoping to find a signal this time. I sighed as I saw that there wasn't any service still.
My family are most likely freaking out at this moment. Lord please help them somehow know that I am alright...well uninjured. After I wiped the forming tears from my eyes, I slide my book bag off and laid the top half of my body down on the rocks. Looking forward I stared at the tree leaves and branches. I was mesmerized by the dark and light colors that came from the shadows and the peeking about two minutes it started to just look creepy so I just turned my head to the side. I saw Sparkle jump off the rock I had put her on and walked around the area and mark it.
After awhile the emptiness I felt my stomach was becoming too hard to ignore. I looked down at the breakfast drink sticking out of my book bags side pouch. I knew that I should put something into my stomach after walking around for so long. And I didn't know how much longer I would be away from home, I needed to keep my energy up. I already felt drained. I grabbed the red bottle out of the pouch and opened it up and put its opening to my mouth. I took my time drinking the delicious sweet and creamy liquid. Then when I was done I put the empty bottle back into the pouch.
I then took to looking around at my surroundings, this area were so green and had small rays of yellow light coming through the trees canopy that shone on some of the rocks and onto the ground. The water in the pool and that came from the waterfall was slightly a dark-colored blue and at the same clear time light enough to see three feet below it's surface. The sound of it flowing wasn't too loud, and the rocks on its side had turned so slick over time that other colors such as orchid were showing on it. Any other time I would have enjoyed the still atmosphere around me right now. It was so peaceful. However being lost in the woods, it didn't bring me joy, but it was enough to calm me down.
Sparkle clawed my leg for me to pick her up, so I took her in my arms. I put my head on top of hers and closed my eyes. Then all l of a sudden I heard laughing in the distance, and my eyes lids opened immediately and my heart rate picked up. It sounded like an old mans laugh. Young high school girl lost and alone with old man in the woods. I don't like how that head line sounds. I stared at the trees ahead of me to see if the sound was coming closer in this direction so I could decide whether to move or not.
My head shot up when I heard the this person coming in this exact direction. I stood up quickly and I picked up my book bag before I walked away as quickly and quietly as I could from the waterfall. I wouldn't want to be heard by who ever was coming.
I ran behind a tree with Sparkle in one of my arms and my other hand was holding her snout so she wouldn't bark, though she still did attempt and I had to quickly hushed her. I looked from the tree I was hiding behind and saw a short man wearing brown dirty clothes and had curly filthy grayish hair. He looked worse than a homeless person. He bent down at the rock I was sitting at and I swallowed hard. Could he know that I was just sitting there? My eyes opened wider when he picked up my hot pink glittered lip gloss. Okay he definitely knew that I was there. and know he looked to be examining it in the suns rays as it sparkled.
"Hmm..." I heard him say. Then a small blue bird flew right next to his head for a short while."Hmm..." he said again and tilted his head back. What is he doing? I heard Sparkle growl under my hand and she anxiously started to shake. And then she shook her head so fast that she pulled away from my hand and then she put her head over my shoulder. I looked down at her and saw that she was staring at something in the back of me. I turned around and saw a lot of little furry creatures staring right at me which freaked out me out. Rabbits, squirrels, skunks and chipmunks were all gathered there like little creepy stalkers. I let out in involuntary screamed and came out from behind my hiding tree creeped out and breathing hard. It was after I realized my mistake I quickly turned around to see where the old man was.
He stood on top of the rocks with his arms folded over his chest and a blue bird on his head. His eyebrows were raised up in the air and I stared at him with wide eyes while holding Sparkle to my chest.
"And who do we have here?" He asked.
