The Depths of Desire

Syrena held herself buoyantly in the yawning dark waters of the lagoon. The iridescent indigo tail set submerged beneath the cool waters; it swished slowly from side to side making small gushing sounds from time to time. Her sparkling sea green eyes; unearthly and yet so innocent longingly peered up towards the injured clergyman. Something strange and unfamiliar to Syrena stirred within her, an unexplainable flood of warmth began to course through her as she looked into his poignant eyes.

She watched as the young handsome missionary winced and clutched at the bloodied, gaping wound across his belly. How it pained her to see him like this; he who had took the greatest kindness upon her when no one else did. He who gave her a name and did not treat her as if she were nothing more than a savage beast sent from the depths below. She felt an intimacy with this mortal; she sensed that he was more like her than she could ever imagine.

Syrena watched in dismay as he tried desperately in vain to hide the wound. It was futile, Philip was slowly fading. The blood seeped in a crimson deluge, across the slick rocks and down it slowly spilled into the water of the lagoon.

"Philip, I can heal you. You need only ask" she whispered.

He looked to her; "Beauty such rare innocent Beauty." he said."I seek only one thing now" he whispered caressing her pearlescent skin.

"What is it that you seek Philip?" Syrena asked quietly.

"Forgiveness. If it were not for me- you would have not been captured." he said regrettably.

"Ask." Syrena's voice sang out…in a sweet honeyed timbre.

Syrena waited for his reply; she watched as he clasped his hand tighter over the wound. He reached gently for her; caressing her beautiful golden brown hair..."Lovely you are…a delicate seaflower, the most wondrous of God's creations- yet so deadly" he whispered. "Forgive me my sweetest Syrena." he pleaded.

Syrena leaned in close, drawing her perfect cupid's bow lips to Philip's in a tender, lingering kiss. She wrapped her cool, slender arms around the nape of his neck. "Do not be alarmed" she whispered. "My sweet kiss has enchanted you" she told the cleric as she pulled him underneath the water.

Below the lagoon the pair vanished, two bodies intermingling as one in a passionate descent to the unknown. The murky waters only seemed to pacify as they dove deeper and deeper. Waters took on more placid shades of shining cyan and turquoise, as they spiraled further down through the lagoon; that soon rapidly coiled in and out of subterranean watery breadths. Faster they went, resembling two apparitions gliding into the vast blue oblivion of a deep-sea paradise…

Syrena held Philip close in her supple, cool embrace; she pressed on further –towards a scintillating white glow…silky ashen light surrounded the pair.

Was this their emblem of hope- a beacon sent from the heavens to signify a love meant to be or would fate set in and tear the missionary from his mermaid?

Only time -fathoms below will decide…this is the story of Syrena and Philip – a story of most innocent and wondrous love- a story that will claim you- heart and soul… a tale that will push you to your own—

…depths of desire.
