On a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again

Paige Dineen sat in a small cafe that was only a block away from her apartment building, it was nice. She occasionally sipped at her coffee and glanced around the small cafe. There was small children nibbling on food while mothers chatted, teenagers drinking some new coffee and the old ladies whispering behind hands.

She sighed. It seemed that she didn't fit into many places. No matter where her and her son Ralph, was they seemed to stick out like a sore thumb. Since she had learned her ex-husband, Drew had been cheating on her; she had picked up her things and took their son out to California.

The jingling of the bell over the cafe door caught her attention. Her brown eyes raised from her coffee cup and met the dark eyes of the man that had just walked in. He had dark curls and was wearing a light blue dress shirt, a name tag was pinned to his shirt and was written in precise swoops 'Walter'. Paige thought that the name Walter fit the man that had just walked in,it seemed to capture the way he held himself. Paige was surprised by the air that surrounded him, it seemed to be smart, most men she have met have turned out to be idiots.

The man, Walter, ordered his coffee and stood near her table while he waited. In that moment, she knew that for the first time, that she wanted a man that wasn't her douche of an ex.

One Year Later

Snow came down in small flakes and stuck to the sidewalk in small clumps. A couple walked hand in hand, leaving footprints in their wake. Cold air brushed against them causing them to move closer to each other for warmth. A chuckle broke through the air, as Walter looked down at the woman that was holding his hand. Paige Dineen was smiling up at him cheekily, as if she had not just tried to tickle him. He didn't understand why she would do that, but every thought was swept from his head at the sight of her staring intently up at him.

Paige gave him a soft smile before kissing him, Christmas lights blared brightly behind them and the snow fell in small drifts around them.

Paige knew that she had just about everything she had ever wanted. At a small glance from her surroundings she was reminded of the Christmas' she had spent with Ralph and Drew and the silly traditions. She shook the memory from her mind and willed herself to focus on the man in front of her. Walter looked down at her with the most emotion that she was sure she had ever seen from him. The thought made butterflies start to fly around angrily in her stomach.

Paige knew that everything would work as long as they let it run its course. To her it was that simple, she didn't know if it was for him. But she knew that she would risk it. She knew that she was far away from the previous life she had lived and was now within a new better one with the man standing in front of her.
