I wake up early that morning. My back cramping from the extremely uncomfortable bed. I stretch only to find a small body blocking me. I look down to see my baby brother has climbed out of his bed again to join me. I smile a little at my baby brother. He's been growing up fast. He is over a year old now. I have a bad feeling about this day. I don't know why yet.

I slowly get out of bed, careful not to wake Sammy. I walk outside of out small bedroom to walk into the rest of the small apartment. I look all over for my dad, but he was nowhere. I called out, "Dad" a few times, but I got no answer. I saw a piece of paper on the table. I pick it up to see it says my name and 'Dad' on it. My dad must've forgot that I not that good of a reader again. I know that he will be back later. He always comes back. It doesn't change that it makes me sad, though. Especially for Sammy. I look up to see a calendar and I see a familiar date. November second. Memories came flooding back from a really long time ago.

"Dean! Dean! Baby, wake up!" Someone called out to me early that morning.

"Huh?" I say, wanting to go back to sleep.

"Dean, do you know what day it is?"

"What day, mommy?" I say, eyes still closed.

"It's November second! Sammy is six months today!" Mommy says, and that makes my eyes snap open. Sammy is six months!

Every month Me, mommy, and daddy celebrate Sammy turning another month. It's a big deal. At least, in my family it is.

"Want to join us down stairs?" Mommy asked.

"Yeah!" I say, excitedly.

"Alright, let's go!"

I hop out of bed and grab my mommy's hand. Together we walked down the stairs. We walk in the kitchen and I see a huge breakfast. There always is a huge breakfast when Sammy turns another month old. Even when he can't eat it.

I run up to Sammy and give him a kiss on the forehead. "Happy six months, Sammy!" My mommy and daddy smile. We set up our plates and eat while mommy feds Sammy his baby food. I also feed him some bites.

We had fun the rest of the day. We played with Sammy and took pictures. It was the best!

The night came. Me and mommy went to say night to Sammy. I said, "Night, Sam." Then daddy walked in the room. He asked is Sam was old enough to throw a ball yet. I said, "No, daddy" and laughed. My daddy was silly thinking Sammy could throw a ball. Then, I went to my room and fell asleep after a goodnight kiss from mommy and daddy.

Later that I night, I woke up. I heard a scream. It scared me. I knew it was my mommy. I wanted to see what was wrong, but I was scared. I heard my daddy yell her name and run up the stairs. I heard a surprised yell and my daddy yell for my mommy again. Then, I smelt of something burning. I finally jumped out of bed and ran towards the noise. Which was in Sammy's room. Sammy.

I felt the heat on my face. It was sooo hot. Burning hot. Hotter than I ever felt before. Then, my dad ran out the room with Sammy in his arms. He put Sammy in my arms and said, "Take your brother outside as fast as you can and don't look back! Now, Dean, go!"

I ran down the stairs with Sam. Faster than I ever ran before. I had to protect Sammy. When we were outside the house, Sammy was still crying. I said, "It's okay, Sammy." Then, my daddy came running out and picked us both up. Our lives were different after that. I remembered later that night my mommy saying it was November second that morning.

When I snapped out of my memory, my eyes teared up a little. I shook my head. I had to be strong for Sammy. At least I know why dad's gone now. I got the french fries out of the fridge from last night. I turned on the TV and watched it while I ate. I thought back to how I didn't talk much after that night. I would only talk to Sammy. I would because Sammy needed someone. Someone had to get him to eat. Someone had to calm him down when he cried. I had to talk to him when I did that. It never bothered me though. I always like talking to Sammy.

Soon, I heard the bed creaking and little feet hitting the floor. I heard them running into the room I was in. The little, chubby feet stopped when Sammy saw me. "De!' Sam squealed happily.

I ignored him. I know it was bad of me. Mommy told me not to do that. But I was sad, and I wanted to be left alone. I saw out of the corner of my eye that Sammy's smile dropped a tad bit. You wouldn't have noticed if you haven't been watching very carefully. "De!" Sammy called again.

I sighed. "Not now, Sammy." Sam's smile dropped.

"Wha wong, De?" Sammy said as he walked towards the couch I was on.

'Nothing, Sammy. Go play."

Sam shook his head. "Me wan to be wiff ou!" Still walking towards me.

"No, Sam! Go!" I said, my voice a little louder. I was frustrated. I would've taken it back, but I was too sad. Sam's steps stopped for a second. He was sad. He turned to walk away, but then he turned back and started walking towards me again. I ignored him this time.

Soon he reached the couch. When he knew I wasn't going to pick him up, he tried to climb up the couch. I ignore him and let him do his thing. He soon had his hands tightly gripping the couch. He somehow got his leg up on the couch, too. Then, his leg slipped. The breath caught in my throat. I dropped the to-go box and jumped for Sam. I caught him just in time before he hit the floor. I slowly brought him up on the couch. I noticed that none of the fries slipped. Surprising.

I heard a squeal, "De!" Sammy giggled. I turned and gave him a mean look. Sammy turned sad a looked away. Didn't Sammy realize he could've hurt himself! I sigh. "Sammy, you could've gotten hurt. Why did you do that?"

"De was sad, me make him happy." Sammy moved across the couch, into my lap, and hugged me. He laid his head on my chest and put his small chubby arms around me as much as he could. I slowly put his arms around him too. "It 'kay, De."

I sigh. I blink the tears out of my eyes. "Yeah. It's okay, Sammy."

We stayed that way for a while. Then, I put him beside me, and put my arm around his small shoulders. I pulled him towards me and handed him a fry. "Chew slow and small bits, okay?" Sam nodded his head. We watched TV for the rest of the day.
