Disclaimer: Sadly not mine :(
Knowledge of what is possible is the beginning of happiness. - George Santayana.
"I love you."
The words still circled in her head. She didn't know how to bring it up; she had told him she didn't remember anything. Stupid lie. He had looked so disappointed but at that moment she couldn't deal with her feelings. She had to recover, build up her strength first then her courage.
"Good morning Detective Beckett! Coffee?" Castle places the container on her desk.
"Thanks Castle." Kate smiles up at the writer. "How's the book coming along?"
"Oh, Nikki is nowhere to be found at the moment." Castle sat down in his seat, leaning on his hands.
"Block huh? Well, your muse is back in action now at least!" Leaning back in her chair Beckett laughs. Castle's lips twitch slightly but his gaze is distant. "Castle?"
"Yeah, um. Yes quite! Great to have you back."
"What's wrong?" Kate places a hand on his knee, squeezing gently.
"You almost died Kate! You flat-lined, it was touch and go! I was – we were all scared our feisty detective wasn't going to be our boss, our friend anymore!"
Laughing nervously, Beckett shakes her head. "You're not getting rid of me that easily I'm afraid."
"I'm – I'm just glad you're okay." Castle says before heading off to the break room.
Detective Beckett,
I am writing to inform you that you have passed all of your medical examinations. It has been decided – by the New York Police Department medical officials - that you are fit to work in the field again.
Captain Victoria Gates.
Stage one complete. Now onto the hardest task, accepting the knowledge she had gained in those painful moments.
"Hey Castle! Can I talk to you for a moment? Kate shouted across the crime scene. A body had been found by a grave. The victim had been leaving flowers for a relative when they had been shot through the head from behind.
"You can always talk to me Beckett. What's wrong?"
"A body in a graveyard. It just got me thinking Castle, about Montgomery's funeral."
"You okay? Do you want to leave and let Ryan and Esposito handle the scene?" Castle brushed her arm. He could see she was having an inner debate. Her eyes had clouded and she looked haunted by something.
"I'm gonna sit in the car for a minute. It's just slightly painful, there are bit missing you know. But it's coming back to me. Just the gunshot for now but it won't stay hidden forever." Kate wandered back to the vehicle, meandering around the graves, checking the odd name. Sitting down, she leant her head on the wheel. Tonight, she would face him tonight.
With butterflies in her stomach Beckett knocked on the door. She knew what she wanted to say but didn't know how to put it. What if Alexis answered? Or Martha? What if he didn't mean it? Too many what ifs but she knew that last one wasn't true.
The door opened and - much to Kate's relief – her favourite writer was on the other side. She knew the possibilities, the risks, but at that moment all that mattered was future happiness.
"I remembered. I love you too."
I thought I'd let you decide how it ends.
I LOVE this pair! Let me know what you think! :)
Hattie xx
