Stepping Out
by Swellison
Sam closed the door gently, walked past the Impala and stopped at the motel's driveway to stretch. Then he ran down the road, turning back towards the motel once he passed the bar four blocks away. Dean had caroused there before swaggering home after 2 a.m.
Dean'd been celebrating, still alive after their rawhead hunt and the reaper. Sam didn't begrudge him his bar-crawl.
Dean didn't need backup; he needed a partner. One fit, sharp and ready for the hunt.
Sam turned into the motel parking lot, slapped the sign and kept on running. One lap down, nineteen to go.
