Dragonlord?
Disclaimer: As usual, this isn't mine. If I owned Merlin I wouldn't be writing a 30 page report about my current research would I?
Summary: A dragon arrives unexpectedly and Merlin has some explaining to do...
Author's Note: I was meant to not write anything until after my report was due in! I thought I'd make a start on a serious fic, but instead Merlin and Arthur had a conversation without my permission! I wasn't sure about leaving it just as dialogue with no 'he said' etc. but I wanted it to flow (it certainly didn't leave me much time when I was writing it), so I'd appreciate any comments about the style!
"Merlin, what was that?"
"What was what?"
"Merlin!"
"Well, I'm not entirely sure, although if I were to guess, it seems to me like that the timely and improbable arrival of a dragon has saved all our lives...can we go home now?"
"And just why do you suppose that dragon arrived after you roared at the sky?"
"Just chance I suppose! I often roar at the sky when I think we're all about to die. How convenient that a dragon happened to be passing."
"The same dragon that you told me I'd killed?"
"Oh, was it the same dragon?"
"It looked the same to me."
"Perhaps he had a brother?"
"A brother?"
"A very similar-looking brother."
"All the other dragons are dead Merlin."
"You thought they were all dead as of a few minutes ago."
"I think it's the same dragon."
"Well then, I suppose you didn't kill him after all."
"Then why did you tell me I did?"
"Despite my many and varied skills, I am not an expert on dragon anatomy – how was I supposed to know what a fatal wound looks like on a dragon?"
"So you were just wrong?"
"I'm astounded that that surprises you so much, you're always telling me I'm an idiot."
"So, idiot, if I didn't kill the dragon, why did it stop attacking all those years ago?"
"Perhaps he's been recovering from your almost fatal wound for the last 2 and a half years?"
"So why wouldn't it attack now?"
"Maybe he's spent the last 2 and a half years reassessing its life and has decided to turn over a new leaf?"
"By saving all our lives?"
"By saving all our lives."
"After you happened to roar at the sky?"
"After I just happened to roar at the sky."
"Because it was just 'passing by'?"
"Because he was just passing by."
"As believable as that explanation sounds, I think I might propose an alternative."
"Are you sure? Because I really think that explanation is the most plausible."
"I think it sounds doubtful."
"I think you're forgetting about our unassailable good luck."
"You mean my great skill and experience?"
"If by 'skill and experience' you mean 'good fortune and a very fine servant'...then yes."
"Humour me Merlin."
"Alright, but I'm fairly certain that this explanation is better."
"Let's say, for argument's sake, that the dragon did not just 'happen to be passing'."
"Where was he then?"
"I don't know! It doesn't matter."
"Sounds to me like this explanation is falling to pieces already."
"The dragon was away somewhere and heard you roar at the sky."
"Surely he must have been close then?"
"Maybe it doesn't need to be."
"Why not?"
"What if you weren't just roaring at the sky because you were frustrated about our imminent demise?"
"Then why was I roaring at the sky?"
"Perhaps you were calling to the dragon."
"But how would I know he was passing through?"
"Possibly you don't need to know."
"Why not?"
"What if you were a Dragonlord?"
"...Oh I think that's very unlikely."
Comments welcome :-)
