He was the only one she ever really liked. He had chosen one of her best friends instead.

Lily couldn't stand it any longer. She had found out the day before that James, the boy she had dreamed about for years but never told him, had chosen to be her best friend, Emily's boyfriend. When she first found out, She and Emily had been talking in their dorm when Lily saw Emily's notebook. On the cover was a drawing of a large red heart and flowers all around it. In the center of the heart was the words "Emily and James." By now Lily had told James she really liked him and she wasn't happy her best friend had that particular drawing on her notebook.

"Emily, is there something you need to tell me?" Lily asked cautiously, not wanting to know the answer. She pointed to the notebook when Emily cocked her head.

"Oh. I am not going to tell you. I think you should hear it from James first."

"Why won't you tell me?"

"Just ask him first."

"No. Tell me." Lily was a bit annoyed now that her friend wasn't being truthful.

"I'm not going to tell you!"

"Emily, you are my best friend. Now... WHY THE HELL NOT!"

"It is better if you ask him and confront me about it. Go ask him."

"Fine!" Lily stormed out of the dorm and went to knock on the boys' dormitory door. Remus answered the door and let Lily in.

"Hi Lily. What brings you up here?" He asked in real curiosity.

"Just looking for James. You seen him?"

"No. He is in the kitchen I believe. Sorry." Lily didn't even bother to say good-bye, she just left and ran back up to her bed and Emily.

"He isn't here. Now tell me."

"No."

"Is it something I'm going to be mad at you for?"

"I don't know."

"YOU DO KNOW! I KNOW YOU DO!"

"You might be mad at me."

"You do know that I'm going to be madder at you if you don't tell me, right?" Emily thought for a minute and decided to tell.

"I talked to him a few days ago and asked about you two. He said you hadn't talked in awhile and that you were sort of drifting apart. I asked him to be my boyfriend and he said sure."

There was a long pause as Lily let this news sink in. She shook involuntarily and a dreadful thought crossed her mind. 'I lost him. I lost him.' She could feel tears swelling in her eyes. He was the only one she ever liked and he had chosen her best friend.

"Are you mad?" Lily considered this. She felt betrayed because James hadn't told her and she felt like her world had ended but somehow she wasn't mad at either Emily or James. Yet.

"No. I'm not mad." She took about five minutes just to get those words out of her mouth. Her life source had been stolen and she was afraid she woudn't get it back. She slowly lowered herself into her bed and covered her head in her blanket. She spent the rest of the night thinking of what to say to James when she talked to him knowing she wouldn'y be able to actually tell him any of it.

Nothing in her life was anything special now. It was all just things that come and go but she didn't care. James was gone and he was the only thing she had cared about. He was her life source.
