The war was over and the Ring destroyed, so Legolas felt that it was high time for him to take a short vacation. Thranduil had been pestering him to take over ruling Mirkwood so that the elder elf could sail West. Legolas had been hard pressed not to snort at that announcement since he knew the only reason that his father wanted to sail was so that he could see Elrond again without the burden of their royal positions between them. Yes, Legolas knew exactly why his father wanted to leave, and that was why he was determined to take his much-deserved vacation before Thranduil managed to sneak out of Mirkwood in the middle of the night.
The elven prince sighed as he leaned back against a tree at the edge of Fangorn forest. The sun was shining warmly on his upturned face and a light breeze ruffled his hair as he sat, his fingers constantly and calmly working. There was no one within several miles so Legolas felt secure enough to enjoy one of his favorite past times: knitting. He rarely had the opportunity to indulge himself like this. He had allowed Elladan and Elrohir to see him knitting a scarf once while he was in Imladris, and the twins had never let him live it down.
However, now he was completely alone and no one would be popping up in front of him to mock his desire to knit socks. He glanced down once, smiling in satisfaction when he saw that the dark green sock was coming along beautifully. Then he looked back up into the trees, wondering for a moment if any of the Ents would be appearing this close to the edge of the forest. He shrugged as he decided that he didn't really care, careful not to disrupt his knitting with the motion.
It was only a few moments later when he first heard the noise. It was a quiet squeaking coming from only a few feet away on the other side of the tree that he was leaning against. Legolas slowly dropped his half-knitted socks, careful to make certain that they didn't snag on anything. Then he tucked his feet underneath him and twisted around suddenly, diving to the other side of the tree. He was anticipating a much larger foe, and thus fell face-first into the dirt when there was no one there.
The elf propped himself up on his elbows, thankful that no one had seen his incredible lack of grace. Then his eyes widened in shock when he heard a small, high squeaking next to one pointed ear. He slowly turned his head and came face to furry face with what could only be Aragorn's pet gerbil. The little ball of fluff had a love-struck expression on its small face, and its little paws reached for the elf's cheek.
Legolas quickly pushed himself back up into a sitting position, but the gerbil had a tight grip on one of his braids and it shimmied up the blond hair to sit contentedly on Legolas' shoulder. One paw was still clenching the braid while the other was running carefully over the shell of the elf's pointed ear. When he heard the excited chattering in his ear Legolas sighed and carefully placed his knitting back into his pouch. He'd have to cut his vacation short in order to take Aragorn's gerbil back to Minas Tirith. And perhaps this time he'd be able to leave the city without the obsessed gerbil following him back.
Legolas gracefully rose to his feet, the gerbil still ensconced firmly on his shoulder. Why, oh why, did he have to be so irresistible?
The End
The challenge: Legolas is lustfully chased after by Aragorn's pet gerbil while knitting socks in Fangorn
