Valentine's Day 2005

I was shocked to find the door unlocked when I arrived at work one snowy morning. There were fresh tire tracks in the parking lot but no cars.

An even bigger surprise was waiting in the office. Sitting on the desk was a box of my favorite candy. On top of the box was an envelope with Kim scrawled across it.

I tore open the envelope, hoping that Josh had finally found me. One look at the card told me he hadn't. On the front was a drawing of Cupid shooting an arrow through a heart-shaped fingerprint.

Inside was what appeared to be a love poem, decorated with red glitter sprinkled all over the neatly-written words. It read:

I know we've been friends forever,

But now I think I'm feeling something totally new,

And after all this time,

I've opened up me eyes,

Now I see,

You were always with me.

Could it be you and I,

Never imagined?

Could it be suddenly,

I'm falling for you?

Could it be you were right here beside me,

And I never knew?

Could it be that it's true,

That it's you?

It's kind of funny you were always near,

But who would ever thought that we would end up here,

Every time I've needed you,

You've been there to pull me through,

Now it's clear,

I've been waiting for you.

Could it be you and I,

Never imagined?

Could it be suddenly,

I'm falling for you?

Could it be you were right here beside me,

And I never knew?

Could it be that it's true,

That it's you?

'Cause today is the start of the rest of our lives,

I can see it in your eyes,

That it's real and its true and it's just me and you.

Could it be,

That it's true,

That it's you?

Could it be you and I,

Never imagined?

Could it be suddenly,

I'm falling for you?

Could it be you were right here beside me,

And I never knew?

Could it be that it's true,

That it's you?

I continued to gaze at the letter in amazement wondering who could have written it. Chewing on a piece of delicious, carmel-filled chocolate, the answer finally came to me.

"It must have been..." I started to say, but then I was interruped by a knock at the door.

"Come in" I called, putting the wonderful gift in the top drawer of my desk. The person who walked into the room had a mop of unruly blonde hair on his head, eyes that were as brown as the chocolates I had just gotten, and a goofy smile that seemed to say 'I missed you'.

I jumped up from my chair and ran over to the man who had been my best friend since preschool. We shared an embrace that I hoped would never end.

"Beep! Beep! Beep" I reached for my alarm clock and turned it off. Groggily I stood up, stretched, and went over to the closet to pick out the perfect outfit. I knew this Valentine's Day would be different. Today, I would tell my best friend my true feelings for him. I just wish I knew if Ron liked me, too.
