Revelation 12:9

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Prologue: Stinging Silence

Alone in the desert, a woman lies on the ground, nearly dead from malnutrion and water dehydration. Her clothes, bought from one of the more expensive shops at Blackwater, are covered in dirt, blood, and vomit. Her brown hair, once neat and tidy, now rank and messy. And her eyes, once bright and full of hope, are wild with madness and delusion.

Jenny has fallen hard indeed.

As she writhed in pain on the ground, she couldn't help but wonder, "Is this all a test, Dear Lord? I have faith, and faith can move mountains, right? God provides for his people. Jesus is the Lord and Saviour!"

Slowly, she propped herself on her side, and looked upwards to the sky. Vultures circled the air. Their presence scared her, but she quickly started reciting words from the Good Book. She quoted Mark 8:35, Luke 9:24, Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13, James 5:15, and lastly, Revelation 22:13, but her feelings of fear would not leave her. Far away, the howls of coyotes could be heard, drawing nearer and nearer. The colour of the sky, which once filled her with awe, now filled her with fear. It was a sickly blood orange, as the sun slowly sets to the west. The last remnants of daylight was leaving her, leaving her to the mercy of a hunting pack.

"Oh Lord, the flesh is weak! Save me, my Lord and God!" She cried out, her voice weak and raspy.

A pack of coyotes melted out of the shadows. Their eyes were gleaming in the dark, yellow orbs filled with hunger. They circled Jenny, growling and snapping, their jaws ready for the kill. She started gasping, and she tried to get away, but her body was too weak. Her head was swimming, the coyotes were coming in and out of her vision.

"At least...at least I won't be awake when they..."

A coyote leapt forward, fangs baring, and clamped its teeth shut on her arm. She screamed in agony and pain as one by one, the coyotes fell upon her, intent on tearing her to pieces.

"OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD!"

Jenny screamed as the coyotes continued their attack on her. Blood streamed down to the ground, and clothes were ripped apart. She flailed, trying to knock them away, but what can one woman do against a starving pack?

Suddenly, a gunshot filled the air.

One of the coyotes fell to the ground dead. The others turned around, only to see their brothers one by one drop down. The pack panicked and ran off back into the rocks, howling and snarling, angry at being cheated out of a meal, but very scared.

Jenny looked up, her face covered in scratches, one narrowly missing her eye, but stretching from her eyebrow down to her chin. Her arms and legs were intact, but she could not feel them. All she could feel was mind numbing pain, and she was starting to black out.

She could faintly hear someone running towards her, calling her name...but all she could think about was this:

"God, why did you let something like that happen to me?"

The last thing she knew was darkness, and the stinging silence.
