I know that there are a handful of other fics dealing with "The Boiling Rock", but this is my take on it. I wrote it down on Sunday, and I didn't get a chance to edit it till now.

Azula paced up and down the room, her brows knit together in contemplation, her fists clenched with her seething anger. She had never thought it would happen- that her two friends would betray her. But they did.

Mai's words rang through her ears. "I love Zuko more than I fear you." That was the excused that she used for saving Zuko- yes, Zuko! Her pathetic and cowardly traitor of a brother! She had given him precedence over her! And after all that he did- he left her and broke her heart! And she still took his side!

Azula snarled as a little twinge gripped her heart. What was it- was it actually pain? Was she- the mighty, powerful Princess of the greatest Nation in the world- actually feeling pain because the ones closest to her had stabbed her in the back? She dug her nails into her palm and mentally told herself, To show emotion is to be weak. You don't need them, in the end they are merely your subjects whom you must command and ensure that they follow your command without a second thought…

But even she could not deny the fact that the events that had just taken place were confusing. She mulled them over and over again until they seemed to be as surreal as a nightmare. First Mai had defied her, and then Ty Lee took her side. And she still could not understand why.

"Why did you do it?" she had asked the pale, black-haired girl. For a second she had let her hurt show, and then she quickly hardened her voice. "You know the consequences."

When Mai had given her reply, she boiled with anger and was about ready to kill her on the spot, but then Ty Lee stopped her. After years of learning and playing together, they both turned against her.

Could she even call them friends? They had played together when they were younger, but she was always the head of the group. Ty Lee and Mai always followed her and did her bidding. It was true that they were first and foremost her subjects, but she still considered them her companions.

Azula kicked the wall with a grunt of rage. "I have no friends," she hissed to herself. "I don't need any friends, I don't need anyone. I am Azula, the perfect Princess of the Fire Nation. My brother is dead to me, and so is my uncle and my mother. I am the favored child in my father's eyes, and I will be the next ruler of this nation. I need no one."

And with that, Azula stopped pacing, and walked out of the room, her shoulders squared and stiffened with her resolve. Her eyes gleamed with determination and her face became harder and harder as she continued to mutter to herself, "I am Princess Azula. I don't need anyone."
