A wish is left in the snow.
Submission for December Fanfiction Scavenger Hunt: #16 "A drabble over 200 words using the prompts little, crack, snow"

The professor watched her trudge through the snow with a purpose and stop before a short stone wall that surrounded a small garden behind the greenhouses. It was New Years Eve and he wondered why the Gryffindor princess wasn't with her friends. He stepped behind the greenhouse and saw her pull out a small piece of parchment from her pocket and fold it into a tiny package. With her eyes closed, she kissed the paper and stuck it into the wall before turning and walking quickly to the castle.
He waited and after he was sure she was gone, he went to the stone wall. His curiosity was getting the better of him, he thought. He noticed several little pieces of paper wedged into stone cracks, most of them faded and weather worn. Picking the newest one out of the wall, he carefully unfolded it and saw her flowing script: My wish for the new year-Severus would stay safe. His breath caught and he stared unseeing at the paper, heart jumping a bit erratically. He couldn't think of the last time someone truthfully and honestly cared about his safety and wellbeing.
She watched from the castle windows as he stood at the stone wall, a small piece of parchment in his hand. She knew he had followed her outside and watched her leave her wish. She hoped it brought him comfort to know that someone cared. She hoped it gave him the incentive to come through this war alive and maybe make his way back to her, where she could love him openly. Maybe.
