"This is where you've been all day?" a voice said to his right before the empty seat next him was filled with his annoyed girlfriend, Lucy Weasley.
"Yes, did you need something?" he asked her distractedly, still fiddling with the puzzle in his hand.
"I had wanted to eat lunch with you earlier, but you were nowhere to be found," she said with a frown.
"Well," he said as he glanced towards the large clock that hung over the exit to the library, "That was three hours ago, so I assume you found someone else to go to lunch with."
She said, "Lily and Lorcan sat with me."
"Then you were fine," he ended, hoping that the conversation was now over. She was being very distracting actually. He quickly shuffled the sides of the cube again, retracing some of his steps. Why was this thing so difficult?
"But this is where you were all afternoon? Playing with one of those cube things?" she asked in shock. Conversations were never done so simply with Lucy.
"Yes," he said. "I got this from my Mum, who can solve these like a pros. Lor can solve them no problem, though he doesn't really care much for them. I just can't see it." He had always loved puzzles - crosswords, word searches, jigsaw. So when his mother sent him his own cube by owl the other night, he had jumped at the chance to solve it, but he just didn't get it. It was just a cube, six sides, fifty-four colours. Though there were many different moves, it was still finite. He should be able to do this. Lorcan could, so why not him?
Lucy let out a frustrated noise after staring him a few moments, before she grabbed the cube from him. "No," he cried out, trying not to lose it. She was going ruin his progress.
She just swatted his hands and then one...two...three... She handed him back the complete cube. "Now, can we go and sit outside. It's such a wonderful Saturday," she said as if what she had done wasn't just magic.
He just looked at her in disbelief. "I spent hours on that and you solved it in less than three minutes," he said, inspecting the cube from all sides.
She shrugged, "You were almost done, and Mum loves those things too. Now can we go?"
He shook his head quickly before grabbing the cube and reshuffling the squares. "We are going to sit here until you show me the secret or I solve it on my own."
Lucy just raised her eyebrow at him and pushed her chair back slowly. "I'll go see what Lily and Lorcan are doing," she said inching away from her obsessed boyfriend.
"You do that," he said, already focused back on the cube. He would get this if it was the last thing he did.
