A mildly AU Supernatural Story.
Pairing: Jo/Sam
Summary: Jo thinking about Sam Winchester. Spoilers specifically for episode 2.14 and 5.02 as well as some general spoilers all around.
Isn't it Obvious?
Everyone had always assumed she wanted Dean. Dean was more her type. There had been the barest hint of a spark between them at first. But that died long before Sam showed up in Duluth.
Jo was surprised no one had caught on sooner. She wanted Sam. More than anything. He wasn't her type. He was sweet, and he loved researching stuff, and he hated hunting, and he went to college and liked it, and he was sort of emo. Completely not her type.
Except he was.
He was tall (understatement), and so damn attractive, and he was tough, and he knew how to get the job done, and he could handle himself, and he was loyal, and he was independent, and he was rebellious. Completely her type.
And he had those puppy dog eyes. They definitely didn't hurt.
Something had been off about him in Duluth. She knew right off the bat. She should've known he was possessed. He kept talking about Dean when Jo had been long over him. It threw her off balance. She'd thought it had been obvious her attentions had shifted. Then Sam said those words that she had wanted to hear, but it felt wrong. Those tempting lips speaking words she had dreamed he'd say and she wanted to believe him but had long ago learned to listen to her instincts.
He mostly kept his distance after but she made damn sure he kept in touch. They mostly emailed. She realized one night that she had fallen hard for him. It wasn't just lust or a crush. She was in love with Sam Winchester. And he stopped emailing her and didn't answer her numerous voicemails. She asked Bobby and found out about Dean dying. Sam changed his number. She couldn't find him, she worried, and she reconciled with her mother. Jo couldn't bring herself to tell her about Dean. They ran into Bobby who was a drunken mess. She'd never seen Bobby like that. It hurt. Everything hurt. She missed them and they were gone. For the first time in a long time Jo cried herself to sleep.
When she heard from Sam again, he seemed… different. Not Duluth different, just, different. She worried. They found out about Dean being back and the apocalypse in one fell swoop. Jo missed Sam more. Then the thing with War happened and Jo felt her heart ache worse. Sam was possessed again. Her mother was possessed. Everything hurt.
She had a moment with Sam afterwards. Just a moment. She had flung herself into his arms. He'd seemed surprised but hugged her back. Jo just relaxed into his arms and savored the moment, burning it into her memory. They didn't talk about it. Jo had punched Dean on the arm and gave him a wry smile. Dean had smirked and then proceeded to check in with her mother. Sam seemed confused but didn't say anything. She wondered if he'd figured it out yet. Her mother had but kindly didn't call her out.
Sam emailed more regularly, Dean called Ellen more often, and Bobby was Bobby again. It was almost normal. Jo and Sam began a game of voicemail tag along with their regular emails. Jo let Sam know in no uncertain terms that she wasn't letting him shut her out ever again. Sam agreed. They both pretended she had meant about the apocalypse. She half-kidded she would sleep with him if the world didn't end. He seriously said he was going to hold her to that. Jo smiled like an idiot to herself and didn't mind one bit.
