Author's Notes:
1) The title is based on a song by Charlotte Sometimes, go find it.
2) I loosely wrote this vignette based on a piece of fanart over at thetroubles (LJ community)
Nathan's favorite color is blue, always has been. When he was five, his mother gave him a box of crayons, and he spent hours gazing over the different shades of blue. He ran each one over a blank sheet of paper, contrasted them against each other. The darker shades (midnight, the ocean before a storm, his father's dress uniform) versus the lighter ones (cloudless skies on a sunny day, his mothers favorite dress).
One color however, puzzled him. He'd come across it accidentally, by mixing light blue with a dose of broken white and bits of grey. It stuck in his mind, and no matter how hard he tried, he could never re create that exact shade.
As an adult, he doesn't think about favorite color much anymore, until Audrey asks him late one night, when they're sated and having those hushed conversations in the calm of her bedroom. He listens to her wind chimes and her breathing and takes a minute to think it over.
He likes blue because it's neutral enough, he doesn't have to ponder his clothes matching, and because it's always on hand in the men's department whenever he needs to go clothes shopping. She's not satisfied with his answer, however, and keeps giving him that quizzical look, willing him to give her a better one. He looks down, and something about the way the light floods into the room, makes her eyes seem so...familiar. Like a light blue mixed with broken white and bits of grey, but amplified.
It's not the first time he's seen them this way, but it still enchants him to no end.
The first time he saw it was at his father's funeral, when she teased him about his stage fright, and then walked away to order a drink. He watched her walk away, and fought the urge to grab her wrist and pull her to him and never let her go.
The second time was on Kick'em Jenny Neck, walking in the woods. Something about the disappointed tone in her voice, something about the way she looked up at him, there's just something about the blue of her eyes that anchors him, takes his breath away and awakes his dormant senses.
Nathan's favorite color is blue, always has been, so whenever Audrey asks about it, he still compares and contrasts the different shades. Darker ones (midnight scattered with stars, his official uniform) with the lighter ones (Bronco blue, cloudless skies on a sunny day, and Audrey's eyes when he does or says something to make her smile).
