Disclaimer: I nothing of NCIS nor its characters.
AN: This is the ninth installment in my vocab oneshot series. The series is a mish-mash from different fandoms. This is my first from NCIS. Enjoy!
Smooth Running
"I do not understand why you have such a strong dislike for this case," complained a dark-haired woman sitting at a desk.
The man across from her replied, "You wouldn't like horses either if the last time you rode one, you couldn't walk straight for two days."
The woman snorted, "Clearly, Tony, that is your fault, not the horse's. You should go horseback riding again; it's really quite fun."
The last of the trio present, another man sitting at a desk, chimed in, "Practice would ameliorate your riding. Then, if you have to ride another horse, you don't have to be continually falling off."
"Shut up, McGoo. We're not at MIT. No need to use big words," instructed Tony. McGee rolled his eyes at his teammate's name calling, but Tony continued. "And Ziva," the man turned to address the woman. "'I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request.'"
Ziva's eyebrows furrowed together, and she sent a questioning look to McGee. McGee shook his head despairingly as Tony Dinozzo looked back and forth with a grin on his face. Tony sighed dramatically, "Come on. Keira Knightly. Pirates of the Caribbean. You have to know it!" He paused and tensed, "I take it from your unnatural silence that Gibbs is right behind me. This doesn't bode well for me."
Tony flinched as their boss's hand came in contact with the back of his head. "Dinozzo… What are you doing?" Gibbs asked with a tone of wary annoyance.
"Heeding your every word, Boss," Tony said in a rush, ignoring the smirks that both Ziva and McGee had. The trio rose from their desks and began to explain what they had found out about the murder of the naval petty officer on a horse farm near Quantico.
Gibbs stood back and observed his team as he sipped his coffee. They worked like a well-oiled machine despite the quirks and idiosyncrasies of each member. They were not the epitome of a team of federal agents. Tony had a humorous and flirty personality that wouldn't be considered professional. Ziva had a dark past that was full of secrets. McGee had hacking skills that were sometimes used without authority from above. Of course, Gibbs's own brokenness led them through their difficulties of each case.
Gibbs lowered his coffee cup and raised an eyebrow. The off topic banter fell silent and Tony looked over his shoulder with an apologetic look, "Getting back to the case…"
A well-oiled machine.
