Author's Note:This is set before episode 12, Resurfacing. I'm a N/A shipper but I'm not a fan of writing things that obviously couldn't have happened, so only some romantic hints. This is my first Haven fic, so feel free to give constructive critisism. I know it's a little short, I'm sort of...testing the waters.
Summary: Nathan and Audrey investigate the murder of a local toy store owner whose death is anything but natural, and their only witness is a six year old girl.
Disclaimer: Haven is very much not mine *sob* If it was, we would have longer seasons and wouldn't have to wait till summer for next season.
"Okay, it's official. Normal cases in Haven are boring."
Audrey tossed the folder onto her desk and leaned back in her chair, locking eyes with her partner. Nathan lifted his styrofoam cup of just black coffee - she'd finally gotten it right - to his mouth to hide his smile.
"I think it's a nice change, actually."
"Are you kidding me?" Audrey asked, giving him an incredulous look. Nathan detected the humor edging it's way into her warm voice. "It feels like that time I was stuck in a little cubicle right before FBI training. You wouldn't believe how many times I considered suicide by stapler."
"Well, as much as I'm glad you didn't give in to your strange death-by-stapler temptations, any person with some patience would be enjoying it while it lasted."
"Are you saying I'm impatient?"
Apparently, the paperwork Nathan was doing was suddenly extremely interesting. He ducked his head and pretended to focus on what he was reading, but even so Audrey didn't miss the way one side of his mouth curled upward as he said,"Maybe."
Audrey studied him for one long moment before she gave up and turned back to the dreaded reports - which she thought should've been considered weapons of mass brain-into-pudding destruction - that waited for her on her desk, mocking her. "Yeah, maybe."
"Did you just agree with me that you're impatient?" Nathan's voice was filled with amusement and almost...smug.
"No," Audrey laughed, completely smug as she took a sip of her coffee - vanilla hazelnut with a dusting of cocoa powder. "What I just did was trick you into admitting that you did call me impatient. Thank you, Nathan, for making it so easy."
"In the process you also agreed with me that you have absolutely no patience."
Audrey narrowed her eyes at her partner. "Ya' know, if it didn't mean more paperwork, I would shoot you right now."
"I sure hope not," came a familiar voice from the doorway of their office. They both started and looked up to see the Chief standing there, his usual half grumpy, quarter amused, quarter indifferent expression on his face. "I don't know how I would explain that one to old Gladys."
"Please tell me we have a 'troubling' case," Audrey asked hopefully, standing.
"If by 'troubling' you mean some poor guy who was killed right in front of his six year old daughter by some invisible force, then yeah."
Audrey looked at Nathan, not knowing whether to be happy that she finally got an unnatural case, or sad that a little girl had witnessed her father being killed. Nathan smirked wryly at her as they headed towards the door.
"'Ask and ye shall recieve', Parker."
