Levi is in the Survey Corps for enough time to know that the hardest part of being a soldier is not his own incoming death, but the death of his comrades.

He hates any kind of death. But what he hates the most are the unnecessary ones. He thinks that every single life is so precious and irreplaceable, and seeing valuable soldiers loosing their lives for nothing is so fucking sad and painful, but the only thing he can do is carry their will and turn it into strength to kill every single titan he finds.

Yet, there are also the sacrifices. They are surely necessary, after all, someone who cannot sacrifice anything, can't change anything.

Levi's squad knew this too, just like their leader. And maybe that's why they were just as mighty as Levi. They were always looking forward, because look back would change nothing.

And also, maybe that's why they were able to sacrifice anything and everything to keep Eren safe, and doing so, keeping up alive a hope for mankind to finally find freedom.

Including themselves.

They were scared, it was very clear in their pale and lifeless faces. But still, they died so bravely, because even if they couldn't take this enemy down, they tried their best. Their eyes were still open, like if they were refusing to leave this world before fulfilling what they were supposed to.

Levi was so proud of his squad.

But, somehow, knowing that they tried their best 'till the end didn't make it any less painful. So the only thing he could do was carry their will, and hope that their sacrifices wouldn't be in vain.

And when the last titan was killed and mankind was finally, and he realized that his squad sacrifices were worth something, Levi looked up to the sky and smiled.
