-1776-
It was a warm spring day in New York, 1776. And then there's John Laurens in South Carolina and Peggy in New York. John writes letters to Peggy every day, Peggy never reads them...
Eliza: Peggy there's another letter from that Laurens guy.
Peggy: Ugh again?! I told him I don't want to see another one of his letters!
Eliza: Don't be so harsh on the guy! He must like you.
Peggy: Well I don't like him. End of this conversation.
Eliza: But-
Peggy: I said "End of this Conversation."
Eliza walks away wondering why her sister is so upset about this. And yes, John does like Peggy and he won't give up.
Letter from John to Peggy:
Dear Peggy,
I am about to lead a bunch of slaves to freedom. I miss you. If you could take the time to read one of my letters, I would be very greatful. Anyways how's your life going? I hope to see you again.
love
John Laurens
Eliza always reads the letters and she knows her husband is John's good friend. Matter a fact, John was the best man at their wedding. So Eliza goes to to Alexander and asks him what he meant about the "brings slaves to freedom" thing in the letter he wrote.
Hamilton: Well, he wants to stop slavery. He knows it's a risk and it's very dangerous but he said he'll risk his life.
Eliza: He'll come back alive, right?
Hamilton: We can only pray.
Eliza ran to Peggy telling her to read the letters she received from John. But she wouldn't. Eliza told Peggy that they were going to the taylor and Peggy would get a new dress but she brought her to South Carolina. Peggy was aware that Eliza was tricking her because the ride was long. Deep inside Peggy longed to see John.
Peggy: Why are we at John's house?
Eliza: Talk to him.
Peggy: Okay..
Peggy knocks on John's door. John opens his door surprised.
Laurens: Peggy?.. What are you doing here.
Peggy: Eliza made me come.
Laurens: Oh..well I'm happy to see you.
Peggy: Why? I don't even respond to your letters.
Laurens: Well, I missed you. And would you like to come inside?
Peggy: I guess.
John lets Peggy inside and offers her some wine. Peggy takes some and asks him what hes been up to.
Peggy: So, John, hows your life going.
Laurens: Fine, but I wish to see you more.
Peggy: John.
Laurens: Yes Peggy?
Peggy: I don't like you..
John stares into his glass and stands up.
Laurens: I need to get ready.
Peggy: for what?
Laurens: To leave.
Peggy: Leave to go where?
Laurens: to free slaves now leave.
- one year later -
Eliza:Peggy? There's a letter for you
Peggy: It's from John Laurens I'll read it later.
Eliza: No. It's from his father.
Peggy: His father? Will you read it?
Eliza: "On Tuesday the 27th, my son was killed in a gunfight against British troops retreating from South Carolina. The war was already over. As you know, John dreamed of emancipating and recruiting 3000 men for the first all-black military regiment
His dream of freedom for these men dies with him."
Peggy: NO! He- He couldn't have..
-20 years later-
Peggy is sick in bed about to die excited to see John again.
Laurens: It's so nice to see you again.
