Opening

Stephen King once wrote that "Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there's little fun to be had in explanations; they're antithetical to the poetry of fear."

In a horror story, the victim keeps asking "why?" But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn't be one. The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest, and it's what we'll remember in the end.

My name is Marshal. I'm a writer.

I've always had a vivid imagination, but this dream unsettled me. It was wild and dark and weird even by my standards.

So yes, it began with a dream.

Following the usual nightmare flow, I was late, trying desperately to reach my destination-a lighthouse-for some urgent reason I-I-I couldn't remember. I was driving too fast down a coastal road to get there...

I didn't see the hitchhiker until it was too late.

The impact sent the hitchhiker flying a few yards ahead, the tires screeched under the car as they brought it to a stop. The impact killed the engine and the front bumper was bent at weird angle. Steam flowed gently out the grating, likely from the radiator.

Marshal quickly got out of the car, not even bothering to shut the door, and rushed over to the body. He reached a paw to the hiker's neck to feel for a pulse. Marshal's head dropped in sadness, and disappointment.

He was dead.

I was sure they'd put me in prison, and I would never see Everest again.

As Marshal pondered this, the headlights illuminating the ground he was on, suddenly went out like a kid blowing out birthday candles on the're cake.

He looked back to the car, he could make out its shape in the darkness but without the bright light it took a second for his eyes to adjust.

He looked back to the body and gasped. He fell on his back in surprise and backed away as fast as his body would alow in his position.

His eyes never left the empty where the body was not even 10 seconds ago.

Suddenly his body was gone.

A/N: what do you guys think? Should I continue this story? PLEASE review. I don't like continuing stories when I get no feed back. also italics are in Marshal's pov (point of view) normal words are in third person view.
