She jolted awake with a feeling of dread rushing all over her. Memories of the nightmare she lived in just moments ago filled her mind, tears beginning to fall as she searched the space next to her blindly.
"Shinji," she called desperately upon finding nothing, "Shinji, where are you?"
Please come back to me, please come back to me, please come back-
She heard footsteps and when the door opened, relief washed over her body.
"Minako? What's wrong?" the worry in his tone was evident, for seeing the usually cheery girl with tears in her eyes was unusual. Moving next to her, he wiped tears away with a gentle hand. "Hey," he said softly, "look at me." She raised her crimson eyes, which were previously fixed on the hem of his t-shirt, took a shaky breath, and words just tumbled out of her mouth. "I-I had a dream you died," she sobbed, even more tears streaking her face. "There was so much blood, all around you, and it felt so real."
He hesitated a beat before saying, "Hey, I'm still here, right? It's okay," but he couldn't bring himself to say, I won't die. She folded herself into his arms then, and he rocked her back and forth, until her tears stopped. Wrapped up in his arms made her feel so content, yet, the feeling of dread still stayed within her, something nagging at the corners of her heart. Sweeping his fingers across her forehead to brush her bangs to the side, he mumbled, "I love you, you know," and looked away, embarrassed. He wasn't one for whispering sweet nothings, but if was to cheer her up, he'd do it in a heartbeat.
She couldn't help but give a small smile. "Me too," she whispered, and pressed a small kiss to his cheek.
"I won't leave you," he reassured her, guilt gnawing at his insides.
The memory of that day was still fresh in her mind and she could hear his promise resounding in her mind. So why was it that her nightmare had turned into reality, and blood pooled around the familiar body she knew and loved so much?
