After Dark
A/n: For Laura, for being my ideas, my canon-loving friend, and my constant William basher. Thank you Laura.
You'd think by now I'd be used to the constant game; Dancing around the flame, never to be burnt. But the fire couldn't be this painful. Life is cruel, death is kind- after all. Standing back and watching, I see you everyday. You push someone else away, you politely decline, you laugh off passes. I should be used to this game, but I'm not.
We're the closest, and there's nothing that can say otherwise. There isn't another person in this world I would rather be closer to. As I stand in front of the house tonight, I'm looking for the perfect words. I'm not good at words, this isn't a movie and they won't just come. Footsteps on the pavement, and I can smell her perfume.
"If you weren't my best friend I'd be slightly bothered by the fact that you're standing out in front of my house at ten at night," she joked.
"I was wondering if you father was home." Actually I was debating what I could say to convince you we don't have to be just friends.
"Do you want to go for a walk?" I nodded and we headed off towards the woods. I seen her glance at me as we headed off the main path.
"What is it?" she asked.
"It's a lot of things." She nodded, waiting for my explanation. The wind picked up and she shivered. I took off my soccer warm up and held it up for her.
"Thanks." She must have really have been chilled not to argue.
"I'm worried." I'm looking for the right words to place. "About us."
"Us?" I nodded, as we slowed our pace.
"Can we sit?" We sit under my tree and stare at each other in the approaching darkness. "Yumi, I worry. About what will happen if I say what I want, or worse, if I don't." She looked confused.
"How can I help?"
"Yumi-" Her eyes are tearing my heart apart. He gaze is killing me, I swear. "I love you." The worry leaves her eyes.
"Is that all?"
"Is that all? Yumi, I take months to work up the courage to say that, and you ask if that's all?" She leaned back against me.
"I love you, too. Just so you know." This girl… is beyond me. Completely…
"So that's it?"
"That's it."
"And we took… this long?"
"Yep."
"I-" she turned, and kissed me full on the lips. All sane thought left my mind. Twenty minutes later, I was walking her home, hand-in-hand.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" I nodded mindlessly. "Night Ulrich."
"Night Yumi." She wrapped her arms around my next and kissed me again. I've got to stop coming out after dark.
