Their eyes locked and they smiled to each other, standing in the glow of the new spirit portal. Korra was elated that they were there, together, whole and safe.
"Ready?"
Asami tightened her grip on their hands and nodded.
"Let's go." She said with wide eyes.
Korra nodded and they walked into the portal together, letting one pair of hands come apart. As their bodies disappeared into the light, they suddenly became weightless. Their hair flowed around them and the sensation was like being in water. The light was blue all around them. They looked at each other. Korra's body was all blue, Asami was magenta. Asami's eyebrows raised, a little fearful. Korra smirked that crooked smile that was so perfectly hers.
"Close your eyes." She said and her voice echoed through the surrounding nothingness. Asami did as told and Korra pulled her forward. After a while the floating stopped, so very slowly she came back down to earth, so to speak, and her feet were planted firmly on the ground. Her body was tingling with butterflies in her veins, feeling lighter, almost like she could glow. It was warm and bright behind her eyelids and she smiled, taking a few more steps with Korra's hand to guide her. The ground was softer here. Korra knelt to the ground and pulled Asami with her, watching her sit on her legs gracefully.
"Can I open my eyes?"
"Okay, go ahead." Korra said softly and let go of her hand.
Asami opened up her eyes and the view was so beautiful she almost cried. The magenta and purple flowers they were kneeling in. The perfect yellow green sky. The spirits! there were so many! Hundreds! Some of them flying, some of them walking some looking at them, some just passing by. Big ones, tiny ones, opaque ones, translucent ones. Spirits that seemed to glow all on their own in the apparent daylight. She was struck with awe. Her eyes clawed at the scene like it was going to go away at any moment but she knew it wouldn't.
"What do you think?" Korra asked.
"It's so… I can't…" She was speechless and turned to Korra. She just smiled and flopped her body back into the flowers. Korra laughed a little.
"I know. I was a little surprised too, my first time."
Asami took off her outer coat and let it fall behind her, laying on it next to Korra who was quick to take Asami's hand again. With their bags beside them and the spirits above them, it felt like the past troubles were all gone and as if peace had always been this close, yet always this far from them.
She turned to see Korra already gazing at her with a content smile on her face. Their eyes met and Asami had butterflies.
"Asami?"
"Yes?"
Korra smiled wiser and came closer. her voice was soft.
"I'm glad you're here."
"Where else would I be?"
Asami smiled and they closed their eyes, noses coming together. Asami blushed and Korra inhaled, pushing past her nose and giving her girlfriend their first kiss. The kiss that was just a start to their life together.
