Eat or be Eaten: Part One, Chapter One
The world…It has changed. Multiple disasters drove mankind to near extinction, and for the animals…Life will never be the same.
"Get it! Quick!" The scrawny she cat yowls, chasing after the rabbit, a-not-as-scrawny tom ahead of her. The tom leaps and tackles the rabbit, delivering a bite to the neck. "Yes!" The she cat stops next to him, panting heavily. Both of the cats' ribs show, and it would be easy to count the bumps on their spines. The two cats begin devouring the hare rapidly, not even discarding the bones. The land surrounding them is practically barren, and the ground beneath their paws is dead, no grass growing.
"We've got to get home soon," the tom says, licking his muzzle, which is stained red. "Before it gets dark."
"Ah, come on. Don't tell me you believe in those, those, rumors!" The she cat answers, chuckling. "You're such a wimp." She cuffs his ear gently, then begins to groom herself.
"You obviously haven't been paying attention, have you?" He asks softly. "How do you plan on explaining the fact that our fellow felines have been disappearing, with the only things left being a piece of fur?"
She shrugs, ignoring the uneasy feeling in her stomach. "It's probably just dogs," she mews, shaking her head. "Seriously, there's nothing to worry about. There aren't any cannibals out there. Just dogs." The she cat goes back to her grooming.
"Whatever. I'm heading back." The tom begins trotting away, when a sudden snap of a twig is heard. "What was that?" He freezes, fear flashing in his gray eyes.
"I don't know…." The she cat scents the air, frowning. "I think I'm going to go to the den now. It's getting cold," she lies, rising and padding past him. The tom follows quickly, clearly anxious. "Lighten up Jimmy," she says, casting a glance at him. "We'll be f-"She's cut off as a cat tackles her to the ground.
"MABLE!" He yowls, leaping at the cat. Jimmy himself is tackled, and then…blackness.
"Wha….?" Jimmy opens his eyes groggily, a dull pain spreading in his head. He tries to move, but a large cat has its paw on his chest.
"Don't move, kitty," the cat growls. Jimmy tries to look around for Mable, but sees nothing.
"Whe-Where's Mable?" He asks, dizzy. "What did you do to her?!"
"You mean that scrawny thing?" the cat chuckles. "We ate her. She was a little bony, but she tasted just fine. Hopefully you're not as disgusting as you look."
"Leana, stop playing with dinner!" A sharp voice barks.
'Dinner?' Jimmy thinks, horrified. "Dinner?" He says aloud, swallowing.
"Yes, dinner," the cat, Leana, meows, her tone bored. "Any last words before we skin you up?" He struggles against her, but obviously their difference in weight prevents him from escaping. "No? Okay then." She begins to slip her claws into his fur, digging beneath his pelt and ripping.
"Actually, I do." He is surprised by the calmness in his voice, despite the fact that a sharp pain spreads where her claws tear at his skin. Leana says nothing, but her expression displays that she is waiting for him to speak.
"Go to hell." He spits in her face, and the she cat growls, her eyes filling with fury before silencing him for eternity with a slice to the throat.
