The groaning had ended and a yell echoed around the what once was a home. Hailey hid I her room, in the room next to her she could hear was her fathers wails of anger and frustration meanwhile her brother Wallace was trying to calm him to no avail.

"Father please, get some rest I will go get you some water." He calmly said but his father only yelled louder clutching his head in agony occasionally knocking something over. Their world had fallen into chaos since the plague had begun, their father had avoided it for sometime now it was his time.

"Please," Hailey whispered from under her bed. She was curled up into a ball tears fell down her face. Her fathers yelling got louder and then she heard the both of them wrestling in the room next door. She was only ten, she remembered her mother falling ill first the doctors didn't know what was wrong and their father let her rest, to no avail she passed away a month later, a few days after the TV went down after that the power, a month later food was scarce and the farm couldn't support them much longer.

"Father stop!" Wallace grunted and there was a loud thud that shook the floor. With that Hailey ran to the room and saw Wallace holding her father down on his stomach with his foot on his back. Her father was unrecognizable, his face was filled with blisters a few leaked pus from the impact, his eye were bloodshot and watery, his hair was falling off along with some skin hanging off his head.

"Wally." She said with a faint whisper. Her brother looked up at her and back down to their father who struggled to escape. Wallace pressed a pitchfork to the back of his father's neck.

"Hailey," He said to her in a calm tone. "Close your eyes."

She didn't her mind was numb and the memories of her sick mother came back to her. The day her father came out of their room covered in blood and a rifle in his hand, their mother lied on the bed a bloody pillow next to her and a towel covering her face. Suddenly she was back and witnessed her brother put an end to their father.

"I'm sorry." Wallace said pulling the pitchfork out of their deceased father. He threw it aside and embraced his sister whispering will be ok, deep inside she wanted to believe it but she knew it wasn't true. Before the power went out they witnessed the horrors of the outside world adults becoming monsters and attacking, their once peaceful farm soon became a small bunker.

"No its not." She said between sobs and held her brother tightly. "We're all going to die like mama and papa." Her brother said nothing for a while.

"I got an idea." He said at last. Hailey looked up wiping her eyes, from everything going on she just wanted an escape. "Lets play pretend."

She only stood confused. "Pretend?" With that her mind became blank focusing on whatever she wanted what if it was all a dream, what if she's only seeing things, what if this was only pretend. She nodded and wiped her eyes then smiled. The room was full of life again her mind soon begun the illusion from despair, an escape from the hell that was now Earth. It was all pretend right?

Haven't written in a while especially a zombie title Ive been rereading the series too and thought might as well give it a shot. "The Enemy" series rightfully belongs to Charles Higson I am only making a short story based on it please support the official release. I am really bad with character ideas so I am currently accepting O.C's to add into the story just PM me about them.
