It wasn't always about fighting.
Some days, they just got together to celebrate being alive. They laughed about the good old days, back when three artifacts had gotten stolen, and they had inevitably became companions. And then friends.
They spoke of the Dark Tournament; the stress of Toguro, and how much they all grew. Of card games and beating up that food vender because he hadn't gotten Shizuru's order right.
Even of the days before being Spirit Detectives, when he'd just learned Kuwabara's name.
"And to this day," Yusuke paused dramatically, grinning as he took a swig of the beer can in his hand, "Kuwabara istill/i hasn't beaten me!"
"Shut up, Urameshi!" A drunken Kuwabara shouted, aiming a blow at his best friend's face, but Yusuke was used to that – it was easily sidestepped. Kuwabara fell flat on his face.
A snicker escaped the quiet little demon in the corner, despite himself. Yes, even Hiei was starting to lose his usual stoic-façade in the face of so much alcohol. "Pathetic fool." He murmured, watching Kuwabara. He snorted, then returned his gaze to the window, ignoring the outraged cries of, "SHUT UP, SHRIMP!"
Kurama chuckled. "Our little group hasn't changed very much, has it, Hiei?" He watched the two bickering teens with fond eyes. Some things honestly never changed.
Crimson met emerald, and Hiei spoke. "You've changed."
For a moment, and only a moment, Kurama's usual façade slipped. His eyes flickered gold, but a smile slowly spread across his lips. "And do you suppose that it is a good change?"
Hiei snorted. "The only person that can decide that is you, Kurama." There was a small creak as the window opened, and the black-clothed figure exited out of it. Moments later, he was gone.
Kurama shook his head lightly, then re-focused his attention to the istill/i bickering teens in the living room. "Ah, Yusuke – put that down! I'm sure Genkai won't be very happy if you go around breaking her things while she's away!"
As he rushed to stop the drunken Yusuke from causing even imore/i damage, he smiled to himself; truly, the one who had changed the most was Hiei himself.
