What if Annabeth were actually to fall at the end of The Last Olympian instead of having Percy save her…
"Gods, I hate heights!" Thalia yelled as she and I leaped. But Annabeth was in no shape for jumping. She stumbled and yelled, "Percy!"
I caught her hand as the pavement fell, crumbling into dust. For a second I thought she was going to pull us both over. Her feet dangled in the open. Her hand started to slip until I was holding her only by her fingers. Then Grover and Thalia grabbed my legs. I tried to pull her up, but I couldn't manage it with the ground disappearing around me.
"Let me go Percy!" Annebeth yelled at me.
"You know for a wise girl, that wasn't very wise," I grunted back.
"You don't have time for this. You have to go." My grip on her slipped a little more.
"Annabeth," I gulped trying to talk with a lump growing in my throat, "I can't leave you." Desperately I stared into her eyes, begging her to understand.
"It's okay," she spoke softly, gazing back at me. "Just let go." But I couldn't.
"NO!" I roared, yanking her upward ever so slightly. But she knew that I was never going to be able to save the both of us. Her free hand reached up grabbing a hold of my wrist and pull it away from her other hand. My eyes widen in horror as my wrist slipped from her grasp.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, only for me to hear. And then she fell.
Thalia and Grover pulled me away from the collapsing edge, while I screamed her name and my heart broke.
