Gemini
The first few days, they don't have time to feel it.
A slow burning want deep inside them.
An identical tornado, torn in two directions.
Mara feels it every time she hears footsteps on the grate above.
She shouts her profanities and curses and every single one sounds more hollow then the last.
Audrey doesn't need much to feel it.
She watches Nathan get dressed, and it rages like wildfire.
This place is nice. Really nice.
She can breathe here.
He sleeps and she lifts his wallet.
In a shop window, she notices a green dress and thinks he'd like that on her.
Just as quickly, she slams the thought back down.
She's exhausted.
Charlotte gave her some vitamins and she stops thinking she'll collapse at every turn.
Nathan tells her again how real he thinks she is.
She feels a strong desire to prove it to him. Over and over again.
Duke doesn't question where the dress came from.
He runs out to steal back the aether and she awaits his return.
Anxiously.
Later, when she's in the tub and he's sitting next to it, they talk.
Of marriage, of houses and sea monsters.
It's their little anchor to hold on to on days like this.
The whole time, Audrey doesn't hold on, she clings for dear life.
The heat is unbearable.
She's soaked and annoyed and he keeps on yammering.
So she does the one thing she vowed to never do again.
His skin is soft where her hand touches it.
He yields into her touch, relaxes.
She finds him inexplicably attractive. She wants him.
So she takes him.
Their love making is lazy and loving.
She loves the way the moonlight falls across his marred skin.
After, he rests her head on her stomach and draws lines there.
He asks about the medical tests and she tells him not to worry.
"I'm sorry baby, but you won't be able to handle this one."
He wanted to wait.
He made her dinner, real dinner.
Made her wait.
She should be angry, but she's not.
He's rough with her the first time.
But the second time he treats her like she's made of glass.
Like Audrey.
She stops him and tells him it's ok.
Because for the first time in a long time, she believes those words.
The end
