A/N: OK, this is my first fanfiction so be kind. Ps. sorry about the ending, I know it's bad but I just wanted to get this up!
Roy Mustang sat on his bed with a pen and paper in his hand and a bored look on his face. He was supposed to be writing up a report on the mission he and his team were on but the task jaded him. Paper work was never his forte.
He sighed and was about to begin his work when he was saved by a quiet tap on his door.
"Come in," he said, looking up from the mostly blank sheet in his hand. The door opened and the blonde head of Riza Hawkeye popped inside his room. "Lieutenant, to what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I couldn't sleep. Thought I'd come see if you were still awake."
"Oh you know me Lieutenant, I'm hard at work in here." They both smiled at this. Riza then paused at the doorway before closing the door behind her and walking over to the Colonel's bed.
Roy took this as an excuse to put his paperwork down, he didn't want to be rude after all. He leaned over and pulled back the blanket on the opposite side of the bed and Riza lay down beside him. They sat in silence. He just watched as she pulled the blanket over herself and gripped the top of it, resting her curled up fists on her chest.
He continued to look at her for a moment before breaking the silence.
"Nightmares?"
"Huh?" She looked up at him.
"Is that why you can't sleep? Because of nightmares?"
She looked down at the brown fabric that was caught up in her fingers and gave a slight smile. "No, it's not the nightmares. My bed just isn't very comfy."
"Oh good," he smiled. "I was thinking that you're a bit old to be crawling into my bed because of your scary dreams."
"Hey," she exclaimed, hitting him on the shoulder. "I was nine and it was stormy. Not very comforting for a young girl the same weekend her father decides to leave her alone with his irresponsible student."
He made a face and then smiled at her while rubbing his arm. "Oh so now I'm irresponsible? I thought I did quite a good job taking care of you that weekend! Remember we went to the fair? That was fun."
"I got lost three times because you refused to hold my hand going through the crowds!"
"Well I found you each time, didn't I?" Riza glared at him until he scowled at her. "Look at me like that all you want but you had fun. You won that weird yellow teddy. Took that thing with you everywhere."
Roy looked down to see her smiling at the memory.
"Ah see?" He smiled at her. "You did have fun and I did calm you down after those damn nightmares. It was a pretty successful weekend if you ask me."
"Hmm, I suppose you weren't all that useless. I did love that teddy."
"Even if they were toys, even as a child you were handy with a rifle."
The smile disappeared from her face and she went quiet for a moment. "Except I'm not shooting for fun now and I'm sure as hell not gonna get any prizes for the shooting I'm doing."
"Things have changed. We're not those innocent kids anymore."
They sat in silence for a minute before Riza cracked a smile again. "I don't think you were ever that innocent Colonel."
"Hey now. I rescued a damsel in distress from the scary monsters outside the window and under her bed. I think that earns me a something." He replied, looking quite offended.
"I don't know why that makes you think you're innocent," she said while leaning across him and switching off the lamp sitting on the bedside table. "But hey, you can dream about yourself being the knight in shining armour if it makes you feel good."
Riza rolled over and pulled the blanket over her, facing away from the Colonel. He stayed upright, watching her tuck herself in, wrapped up beside him, hidden from the monsters like when they were little. He eventually tucked himself in beside her, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Laugh all you want Lieutenant, but I'd look fantastic in some armour."
