My Baby
Patrick was wheeled into Resus on a trolley. Lara tried to follow him but
was stopped by a hand on her arm.
"Lara, there is nothing you can do for him now, yeah, come with me
and we'll wait in the relatives room."
Lara looked sideways and saw Anna standing next to her.
"O.K" she replied and allowed herself to be led away.
"He's stabilising. Lucky he was with Lara, if she hadn't been there we would have definitely lost him." Max stood back from the bed pulling his gloves off, "ICU have a bed free, he's not out of the woods yet but if he remains stable tonight his chances are greatly improved". "How is he?" Anna asked pushing the door open and standing sideways to let Max past. "Not too good but we haven't lost him yet." Replied Dillon "How's Lara?" "Shaken, but she'll be better knowing he's still alive. She finally said yes this time." "Yes to what?" asked Colette pulling her apron off and heading for the door. "Marrying him didn't you know?" said Anna still holding the door. "Well I do now. God imagine if we'd lost him." "I'll go tell her that he's all right", said Dillon.
Dillon pushed the door of the relative's room and took a small step into the room. Lara was sitting on the chair systematically shredding tissues; several lay scattered across the table. She looked up as Dillon entered. "How is he?" Her face was tear stained and she was nervously fiddling with a ring in her hands. "Head injuries are very serious but Patrick's a fighter, if it wasn't for you we would have lost him." "Can I see him?" "He hasn't come round yet but sure. We're just waiting for ICU to come and get him."
Lara entered Resus and sat in the spare chair. It was empty now as it was nearly 2am. Patrick looked so helpless lying alone on the trolley; tubes leading to various bleeping machines were fighting to enter his wrists and neck. "Hey Patrick, it's me," Lara spoke softly, "I'm still here. You win the prize for scaring me! Don't leave me O.K? I'm staying tonight." Just then the door opened and Dillon came in. "They want to take him up to ICU now. Are you O.K?" "Fine, "Lara said standing up and wiping her eyes on her sleeve. Can I stay with him? "Yeah that shouldn't be a problem"
A few weeks later Patrick was ready to go home. He was staying at Lara's for a few days until he was really better. They were sitting at the kitchen table having breakfast when suddenly Lara spoke. "Patrick, there's something I need to tell you." "What? Are you O.K?" "I'm fine but," she paused and took a deep breath, "I think I'm pregnant" A slightly shocked silence filled the small kitchen Patrick broke it. "Wow", he let out a long breath, "Lara that's amazing, how far gone are you?" "Sixteen weeks", Lara sounded relieved, "we're going to be parents!" "So I take it we'll be getting married after the baby is born?" "Definitely, I'm not going down the aisle looking fat."
