"Is it true?" Dick asked as he climbed through the window. He had just finished his patrol on the east side of Gotham. He was out late again when he heard the news. Honestly, Dick could not believe it; he needed to hear it from her.
Barbara turned to look at him. Tears streamed down her face. That's what bothered Dick so much; Barbara Gordon never cried. She did not speak, only answered in a nod. With that she turned her chair away from Dick.
Dick had never seen her like this, but how else should she react? It was not everyday such a thing happened. No one would have been prepared. Dick walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her neck.
"So, what you going to do?" He asked.
"I'm not sure. I'm still trying to process everything."
"How are you feeling?"
She hesitated to answer. "It's like I'm flooded with every emotion imaginable. I really don't know what to feel."
"That's OK; I'd be worried if you didn't feel like that." Dick began to massage her shoulders. "Wow, you're tense."
A small smile graced her lips. "Oh, shut up boy blunder. You would be too if you had such a bombshell drop on you."
"It's good you still have a sense of humor." Everything was quiet for a while. After a while Dick stopped rubbing and turned Barbara around to face him.
"Babs. You know that whatever you decide to do, I will always love you and I will always be here."
Barbara leaned in and gave her love a quick peck on the lips. "I know you will."
Then she bit her lip; something she did when she was about to ask a question. Dick already knew the question. He stayed out later than usual to decide what to tell her. "What do you think I should do?"
"Well...um..." Even with all the time he spent pondering his answer, he still could not find the perfect one. "I don't know. I guess first I would want to know everything about the procedure. I don't want you to do it if the risk is too high. I couldn't stand the thought of loosing you. That's really all I can come up with. I just want you to be happy and choose carefully."
"Dick, I've gone over the information and the risk is high; there's a 28% chance it will work, a 4% chance it won't do anything, and a 68% chance it could backfire. There is a chance I would lose it all, and that scares me. If I lose the rest of my body, then I'd be a living corpse. But if it did work, I wouldn't be stuck in this damn chair anymore. I'd give almost anything to be able to walk again, but I can't decide. I think I need a little more time to think about it."
Dick smiled. "That's fine. You shouldn't just decide without thinking about it. But, just remember that it doesn't matter to me if you do this or not. You're still Barbara Gordon and nothing can change that. And nothing will ever change my mind about me spending the rest of my life with you."
This time, the kiss was more passionate. Barbara wrapped her arms around her lovers neck and Dick gently picked her up out of her chair and carried her bridal style to their room. That night, the passion between the two lovers was unfathomable. Everything around them vanished; all the worries and drama in their life gone as did any thoughts on the procedure. The only thing that mattered to Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon was each other.
