Chapter 1

14 billion years ago, there was darkness. Then, light filled the empty void in response to a booming command. Light shone. It's creator smiled. "Much better," said Notch. "What do you think, Steve," he asked, turing towards his brother. "It's beautiful," replied the creator's brother. From then on, the two brothers worked together in creating the blocky universe we live in today. Notch focused on the bigger things, while Steve focused more on the details. In seven days, their work was finished, and they were satisfied. Almost.

"Notch," said Steve.

"Yes brother, what is it?" The two were sitting on a wooden bench in the garden of their home, the Aether.

"Don't you feel like we are missing something," asked Steve. Notch turned to face his brother.

"No. Why?"

"Well," began Steve. "I was thinking that perhaps we should add life to the planet of Minecraftia." Notch looked at his brother, puzzled.

"What do you mean, 'add life to Minecraftia?' We already have the plants and the animals.

"No, I mean add creatures who are more intelligent. You know, creatures who can make their own decisions and always just act upon instinct." Notch pondered this for a bit. He then smiled.

"You know what," he said. "You're right! I mean, it does feel empty and lonely when it is just us, the plants, and the animals. And perhaps they could look more like you and I, except minus the powers." Steve frowned.

"Why wouldn't they have our powers," he asked. He was quite confused.

"Well," started Notch. "The animals and plants do not have our powers, so why shoud the new creatures have them as well?"

"Because the creatures would be smarter and wiser. What could go wrong?"

Notch sighed. "If everyone had the same powers as we did, then what would be the point of our existance?"

Steve looked down at his feet, and spoke. "I guess you're right," said he.

"So," said Notch. "What do you reckon we call these creatures?"

"Well first off," said Steve. "I was thinking of having different races of these creatures. Secondly, I would actually prefer it is you would do the honours." Notch smiled.

"Very well," he replied. They shall be called...," he paused, and his smile grew wider as he looked at his brother. "...Steves," he finally said. Steve beamed.

"R-Really," he asked. He was elated.

"Absolutely," answered Notch. And with that, Notch and Steve got to work.
