My drabble submission for the "water" prompt challenge.
When he was a child he almost drowned in a swimming pool.
It's not something he remembers, not really. But sometimes he wakes in a blind panic, surrounded by a lack of world in which to gain purchase and bursting through into the ugly pain and coughing and stinging that accompanied his rescue.
In his more maudlin moods he sometimes wonders if that is the sensation that greets the child after birth. If so, no wonder they cry.
After his surgery his head was filled with the sharpest of inescapable pain. The sounds of the world previously muffled burst through and shocked him with the degree of difference. It demanded his interaction, no longer allowing him his illusions of detachment.
He does not know what will happen after Sara, only that maybe it will be something like a re-birth. And he does not know if he has the strength for the experience.
He no longer knows how to cry.
