Drabble: A Letter to Albert

Disclaimer: The Count of Monte Cristo is not mine.

Dear Albert,

By the time you read this letter, I may or may not be by your side any longer. There are countless possibilities during our duel that we may not be aware of. Allow to start from the very beginning before the inevitable.

How many years has it been, my beloved friend? How did we end up this way? Torn between two opposing ideas, you siding with the count while I alone defend my own.

I don't believe in fate. I don't believe in destiny. I believe in creating my own future and in changing it.

Sometimes I just can't help wondering what would happen if you didn't pick the Count's pocket watch? If we didn't go when he invited us to lunch nor would it end this way if we didn't witness the execution?

Also, I would like to take this as an opportunity to apologize for depriving you of your duel. You know how much I trust you; please don't take this against me; however I cannot bear you getting hurt because of that evil man. I would offer my life in exchange for yours.

We've grown together and known each other far too long. I cannot watch you battling with him even if it was for your betrayal. I admit that I am jealous of your relationship and admiration for the Count, numerous times I've asked myself what you see in him that you don't see in me.

If only you knew.

Before I go, I wanted to share to you one of my latest dreams. It was about spending your birthday in a beach in Normandy. You, me and Eugenne in the South of France, our food was covered with sand and we were enjoying the strong wind. However, Eugenne's favorite hat was blown away so we tried to catch it but failed to do so. It almost felt real, only that it was only the three of there.

Whether or not I survive this morning, pray tell go to the beach with my sister and make my one last dream a reality.

Please also tell Eugenne, how much I love her.

Do not burden yourself if I ever pass away, continue to live and survive. Remember I will still be watching you and will be forever in your heart.

Love,

Franz
