The first time he meets her, she's at her desk, a newspaper in her hands.

"Amelia Bones, meet John Dawlish, our newest Auror," Cornelius Fudge says brightly.

Amelia barely glances up at him as she offers a mumbled greeting. She turns the page, folding it in half, her dark eyes scanning over the words there.

"Very nice to meet you," John says, and she waves a dismissive hand.

"Not very sociable, is she?" he mutters to Cornelius, but he can't take his eyes off of her, despite her cold indifference.

"She warms up after a while," Cornelius assures him, guiding him along to the next office. "Took her nearly a week to acknowledge me when I first started."

Years later, he lifts her hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. He smells the faint traces of paper and ink on her skin, and he can't help but to smile.
