This oneshot is dedicated to Bec Le (if only because it was Bec's idea first!!)

Thanks for Reading, as ever.

"I can hear him singing sometimes... In my mind. Such ancient songs."

The Face of Boe looked out upon the sterile, white hospital. He saw the sweet little cat nurse, that if he was a million or so years younger, he would have chatted up.

And then he saw him – the Doctor. Barely born yet, still new and blinking in wonder at the universe which was so new to his brown eyes, though the Face had seen him so many times in his countless years.

The Face of Boe burst into his ancient song.

Oh, baby; baby,

How was I supposed to know

That something wasn't right here?

Oh, baby; baby,

I shouldn't have let you go

And now you're out of sight, yeah

Show me

How you want it to be

Tell me, baby

'Cause I need to know now

Oh, because

My loneliness is killing me

(And I)

I must confess

I still believe

(Still believe)

When I'm not with you, I lose my mind

Give me a sign

Hit me, baby, one more time

The Doctor's eyes widened.

"Yeah... that's a very ancient song."

He gulped. The Doctor was trying not to laugh.

Snigger all you want, Doctor. You can't deny the classics.

A few hours later, when the chaos caused by the walking infected had been repaired by the Doctor, everyone was seeing to the needs of the clones.

The Face of Boe sat in his smoke, forgotten, in Ward 26. Only the Doctor, and Rose - who the Face realised, was not Rose at all – remembered him.

"The Face of Boe!" the Doctor cried, "You were supposed to be dead."

There are better things to do today. Dying can wait. I have grown tired with the universe, Doctor, but you have taught me to look at it anew.

"There are legends you know, saying that you're millions of years old."

That would be impossible.

"Wouldn't it just?" the Doctor smiled a knowing smile, as he continued, "I got the impression... there was something you wanted to tell me..."

A great secret.

"So the legend says".

It can wait.

After so long, teasing the Doctor was still fun. And yet, the time with him was to be so short.

"Oh, does it have to?"

We shall meet again, Doctor, for the third time... for the last time... and the truth shall be told. Until that day...

And the Face of Boe began to sing. A great song, a famous song, an ancient song. As he rippled and contracted and expanded into nowhere, his song lingered in the consciousness of the Doctor and Rose-Cassandra.

Mamma mia, here I go again

My my, how can I resist you

Mamma mia, does it show again

My my, just how much I've missed you

Yes, I've been brokenhearted

Blue since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go

Mamma mia, even if I say

Bye bye, leave me now or never

Mamma mia, it's a game we play

Bye bye, doesn't mean forever

Mamma mia, here I go again

My my, how can I resist you

Mamma mia, does it show again

My my, just how much I've missed you

Yes, I've been brokenhearted

Blue since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go

Mamma mia, now I really know

My my, I could never let you go

Puzzled, yet impressed the Doctor remarked "Now that is enigmatic. That...that is...that is textbook enigmatic."

And after Cassandra was returned to the place where she was happiest, Rose Tyler and the Doctor returned to their TARDIS, the ancient song still ringing in their ears.

"Doctor?" Rose murmured hesitantly.

"Yes Rose?"

"Was the Face of Boe singing Abba?"

"Yes Rose. Yes he was."

LOL

Hope it was enjoyable to read, it sure was fun to write!
