"The Call" 2/13/15 9-10am Friday the 13th, in place of homework or packing.
In the world between worlds something unusual happened. It was not unheard of, just extremely rare. If noticed early on it would be stopped immediately. For the results had been proven… uncontrollable.
Two pools of water sat closer together than most. One of them was on slightly higher ground than the other resulting in a very small trickle of water to run down into the other. While a small trickle did little harm to either pool, over time that trickle would grow, widening into a wider and wider pathway. And then… who can tell the results of what will happen.
"The Call"

1.
It started out as a feeling
A young boy jerked awake in the dead of night. Quickly the boy glanced around the orphanage attic where he slept. No one was there. But he still felt comfort.
Which then grew into a hope
The feeling of the dream echoed in his heart. The words he had heard reverberating around his subconscious, just out of his reach. The feeling never left but grew each night.
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Someone needed him. He felt it in his heart and in his mind. There was a voice pleading for him to reach it. The idea overwhelmed him—he was needed.
Which then turned into a quiet word
After a while he realized what his dreams were telling him. He was being called. Somewhere he was needed and this song echoing softly in his mind was telling him so.
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
The words were strange. When he woke he could see them in his mind's eye. Strange letter combinations with even stranger pronunciations. Every night they were becoming clear, sharper, louder. More desperate.
I'll come back when you call me
Every time he heard them in his sleep the urge to be somewhere else overcame him. He was restless. He need to be moving, to be seeking, to be following the call that controlled his dreams. Yet he couldn't….
No need to say goodbye
Although he could not understand the words of the song himself, his heart understood the meaning. The promise. Every time the song ended he felt sadness… and hope.
2.
Just because everything's changing
As he grew up the boys waking world began to change. He gained other dreams and goals, hopes and fears. Still the song welcomed him in his sleep.
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
He was alone more so now than ever before. No longer was he sheltered be adults forced to tolerate him. He was alone. The feeling pulsed around him like a cloak, urging him on.
All you can do is try to know who your friends are
His years in the academy taught him many things about those around him. How to tell when someone lied to him. How to tell when an adult was purposefully misleading him. How to tell when one of his classmates was doing something to be mean or to try and show him his mistake so that he could learn the right way.
As you head off to the war
When he was placed on a team he thought things would get better. They did not. The conflicts and hardships of real missions was much more than he expected. Much greater. Much more personal. He felt so alone.
Pick a star on the dark horizon and follow the light
Sometimes he would watch the sky as they traveled, thinking of what he had lost and gained over the years. Only one thing had remained constant throughout his life. Greeting him every night. Continuing its call.
You'll come back when it's over
He knew some day he would be able to understand why he dreamed what he did. He was no longer the impatient boy of his youth. Time had taught him much. The echo of the song more.
No need to say goodbye
Great change has happened to the world. Conflict like no other has affected all who walk it's surface. It was his world. It would always be his world. The only one he knew. Or so he had thought.
3.
Now we're back to the beginning
When he next dreamed something was different. At first he wasn't sure what. But then he realized it.
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
Something was coming. The song was growing closer. It was moving.
But just because they can't feel it too
He was torn between excitement and fear. They gave him weird looks when he spoke of a coming tide. "The war is over. It's time to adjust."
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
But it is not a war that is coming. No. It is a calling. A growing need. He is desperate now for the source. There is something he is missing.
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
A clue. He begins to see four shadows in his dreams. Four voices speaking out in his mind. The words are strange and not strange. He begins to sense their meaning. Understanding is close at hand.
'Til they're before your eyes
The song stopped. For the first time since its beginning the song was not heard in his dreams. But something else was.
You'll come back when they call you
He was moving before he had any conscious knowledge of a destination. The pull greater than ever before. And yet different. Instinct led now.
No need to say goodbye
Suddenly he was there. And the song was no longer in his mind. For a moment his heart stilled. And then all was right as he dropped to a knee before the figures.
No need to say goodbye
He was finally home and he had never even realized he was gone. The voices greeted his ears with familiar words. Words of welcome. Words he understood with more than just his heart.
Perhaps one day those two pools of water will merge completely. Or perhaps not. Something might form a dam, preventing further mixing. Or something might not. Who can know? The only way to find out is to wait and watch… and listen.
