He sat staring out the window a small smile playing on his lips. An old man…
Margaret chided herself; he was still Hawkeye…her Hawkeye. Even if he didn't recognise her anymore…even if he couldn't care… 'No' she scolded herself again, even like this he still welcomed her, he was still hers. Her Hawkeye, she played with the words on her tongue. She loved him even though it broke her heart.
They had been good together; they had had their fun, now it was all too much for her. She hadn't been able to cope, he had been supposed to look after her, to protect her instead she was left looking after him.
'Mum' Margaret turned away, her son was calling her. He put his thin arms around her in a hug. He had taken after his father in so many ways she thought as she began to let go and sob as she always did. It was inevitable.
'Mum, look at him, he's happy like this…'
'How can he be, he hasn't got us anymore, he doesn't recognise us…' she sobbed.
The young man looked down on his mother, and rested his chin lightly on her slivery grey hair; he looked over to his father with a sad smile. Hawkeye was grinning to himself as he continued to stare out of the window at the beautiful views of the grounds outside.
'Yes' he said sadly. 'But he no longer has the painful memories either, and we both know how the used to tear him apart'
Margaret looked up at her son, she had know he was aware that his father had problems, it was hard not to when he had sometimes made a match for the children in screaming the house down in the middle of the night, but still she wished she could have protected her son and his younger sister from the truth.
'You've been so strong' she stated looking with sorrowful love at her eldest child.
He smiled 'come on, lets go home, your grandchildren want you to come over for tea'
Margaret smiled back at her son. 'Yes' she said; then looking back at her absent husband she sighed and added softly with a shake of the head. 'I just hate to leave him; alone again…both of us'
